Now that Lerner knows about Fip's magic, she has some extraordinary powers of her own - and some big decisions to make. Should she eliminate crime? Her mean neighbour Bobby Nitz's evil dog? Or simply wipe Cleveland Park Middle School off the face of the earth? Or will destroying anything cause effects that she can't imagine or predict? From Publishers Weekly
This first novel may hold some appeal for bookworms, but a multitude of subplots proves distracting and weakens the tension. There are two basic story lines. The first revolves around a newborn worm named Fip, whose appetite runs to words rather than dirt. The second centers on sixth-grader Lerner Chase, recentlyAand unhappilyAtransplanted from Wisconsin to Washington, D.C. Lerner discovers Fip and realizes that every time he eats a word, the object it signifies disappears forever. The results of Fip's consumption can be pleasant (Fip eats a vending machine number and unleashes free chocolate bars) or dire (Fip eats the name of a newly charted star, sending its discoverer into a crisis). These developments occasion secondary story lines (e.g., about a sinister tycoon who employs thumb tacks and child labor to train the vicious dogs he sells as "Attackaterriers"). Amato plausibly sketches Lerner's evolving sense of responsibility about Fip's powers, including her panic when he almost eats the word "oxygen" and the name of her teacher Mr. Droan (but ends up devouring the words "Markus Droan's suit" instead.) The classroom dynamics between the ruling elite, Most Powerful Ones on Earth (MPOOEs), and the outcasts, Sorry Losers Under Ground (SLUGs), are believable enough, but with the exception of Lerner, most characters emerge as caricatures or types. Ages 8-12. (June)

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-The book opens with the turn of a page on the Bookworm's Desk Calendar, heralding the birth of a seemingly ordinary worm. But this is no common creature, for readers soon learn that he has a voracious appetite for the written word. It is sixth-grade Lerner Chanse who discovers that when Fip eats a word, that object disappears-forever. Lerner is having a hard time finding her place in her new school. She doesn't want any part of the MPOOE club (Most Powerful Ones on Earth), nor does she want to belong to the only other group-the SLUGS (Sorry Losers Under Ground). In a series of clever, if far-fetched events, she daringly uses Fip's power to turn the tide on the MPOOEs. Tongue-in-cheek wordplay in the quote on the desk calendar that opens each chapter prepares readers for the outlandish series of happenings to come.
Doris Gebel, Northport-East Northport Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 4-6. A hungry baby worm and a lonesome sixth-grade girl named Lerner join forces to create a surprising amount of havoc in this first novel. Fip the worm prefers paper to dirt, but Lerner quickly realizes that whatever Fip eats disappears. For instance, when he eats the words "vending machine," the machine disappears, leaving a pile of candy on the floor. This becomes a moral dilemma for Lerner, as the power to have things disappear can have weighty consequences. If the pace is choppy and the weaving of several side plots (including one involving child labor) becomes confusing, the basic idea is creative, and Amato delivers some intriguing moments. REVWR

An Unusual Friendship
By Young Mensan BookParade
The book, "The Word Eater", is a book about a friendship between a magical worm, Fip, who eats words, and a girl named Lerner Chase, who is new at Cleveland Park Middle School. Being new at school, Lerner tried hard to fit in, but the school was ruled by mean bullies club called MPOOE, Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The bullies in the club called everybody else outside the club SLUG, Sorry Loser Under Ground.

At first, Learner tried to belong to MPOOE, having been tempted to do bad things that the bullies called "dare". Soon enough Learner got fed up with MPOOE's ridiculous and mean behavior and stood up for herself. After that, MPOOE labeled her as SLUG and made her school life miserable.

In the middle of her misery Lerner found Fip in school's Science lab and slowly discovered his magical power. Any words that Fip ate disappeared forever. Lerner tried many experiments with different words resulting a star to disappear, freeing children from child labor slavery, and many small and big accidents at school. But at the end, both Fip and Lerner realized that having a magical power is a very big responsibility and decided to get rid of Fip's power by eating the word, "Fip's Magic".

My favorite part of the book was when Fip ate the word MPOOE club and made the bullies club disappear forever. There are meanies in most school and I think many other kids would enjoy this book.

The older kids, both boys and girls, from 11-16 would like the book because of the justice served to the mean bullies club. I also think that little younger readers around age 8-10 would enjoy it too mainly because of the magical part of the story. I am 7 and, honestly, the book was little bit boring and hard at the beginning because the story was quite jumpy to introduce 7 different characters. I had to pause a lot and had to flip back to the earlier chapters. As the book developed into the middle and I was gotten used to the characters and I finished the later half of the book in one day. Considering that, I would say ages 10-14 will be closer audience group, both boys and girls.

The Word Eater

I liked this book because it gave you something to think about. You really had to think about what Learner was doing when she let Fip eat all those words. If you can make sense of when the author jumps from different characters and places this is a good book for you. The names were very interesting it seemed that all the names represented the personalities of everyone. Like Mr. Droan and Learner Chanse. Learner had a chanse to learn a lot of things. Mr. Droan was very boring. This book had a lot of interesting details with humor on every page. MPOOEs and SLUGs were very descriptive just from their names. SLUGs are the Sorry Losers Under Ground and the MPOOEs Most Powerful Ones On Earth. At the school the only person who seemed to care about the kids was the librarian Ms. Popskavitch who alled everyone cookie.

I really liked the book because it was entertaining, and it was fun to think about being or having a worm like Fip. The names of the characters were weird. The librarian was really funny. She called everyone cookie. I liked the ending where they had the cartoon-like pictures. I thought the MPOOE club was stupid. It was a little over reacting because they thought they were the Most Powerful Ones On Earth. The name SLUGs was a mean name to make. Sorry Losers Under Ground is just plain mean. When i started to read the beggining of the book it felt a little boring, but once I got closer to the middle of the book, I think it got better. I think it was a really good book.

The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing (Star Trek: Enterprise Book 13), by Michael A. Martin

With nothing left to lose, the Romulan Star Empire engages in all-out war against humanity, determined once and for all to stop the human menace from spreading across the galaxy.

At the start of the twenty-first century, unconditional war swept across the Earth. A war that engulfed the great and the small, the rich and the poor, giving no quarter. Each side strove for unconditional victory, and as battle built upon battle, the living began to envy the dead.

Chastised by the cataclysm that they had unleashed, the governments of Earth came together. Humanity vowed to put an end to war and to strive for the betterment of every living creature. A united Earth created Starfleet, an interstellar agency whose mission was to explore the cosmos, to come in peace for all mankind. It was a naïve wish that was battered by interstellar realities, yet man persists in the belief that peace is the way. Banding together with other powers to form a Coalition of Planets, humanity hopes that the strength each can offer the other will allow for peaceful exploration.

However, the rise of the Coalition strikes dread within the Romulan Star Empire. They feel its growing reach will cut them off from what is rightfully theirs. The Romulans know that the alliance is fragile, that the correct strategy could turn allies into foes. Perfecting a way of remotely controlling Coalition ships and using them as weapons against one another, the Romulans hope to drive a wedge of suspicion and mistrust between these new allies.

One Starfleet captain uncovers this insidious plot: Jonathan Archer of the Enterprise. Determined not to lose what they have gained, outmanned and outgunned, the captains of Starfleet stand tall, vowing to defend every inch of Coalition space until the tide begins to turn.

Day Thirty-Seven, Romulan Month of K'ri'Brax
Tuesday, July 22, 2155
I.K.S. Mup'chIch, near Alpha Centauri

"WE HAVE ESTABLISHED simultaneous control over both of the thhaei warships, Commander," Centurion T'Vak said in excited tones as he leaned over one of the awkward bridge consoles on the seized Klingon vessel. "The arrenhe'hwiua telecapture system continues to function flawlessly."

Commander T'Voras sat back in his chair -- a chair built to Romulan specifications, the sole concession to pure comfort he had allowed himself since he had seized this rattletrap battle cruiser from its vermin-infested klivam crew. Taking control of a ship operated by those bumpy-headed savages had been far more challenging than today's mission had proved to be so far. He savored the relative ease with which the ships constructed by the Romulan Star Empire's Vulcan cousins evidently could be taken by remote means.

He knew he could scarcely imagine how greatly the Empire's military would benefit from reverse engineering these highly advanced Vulcan starships. But he understood well enough just how much their acquisition would bolster his own career and the wealth and status of his family.

"Very good, Centurion," T'Voras said, steepling his fingers before him in an effort to keep his thoughts focused and to ward off overconfidence. After all, if the Vulcans somehow managed to recover control over their communications equipment, they could both summon and receive assistance very quickly this deep inside Coalition territory. "Secure our prizes for towing back to Romulus. And make certain that the crews aboard both vessels are dead before we get under way. We don't need any mishaps on the way home."

"It will be done, Commander," said T'Vak.

T'Voras decided then to allow himself one luxury in addition to his padded chair -- a small, triumphant smile.

Early in the month of re'Ti'Khutai, Year of ShiKahr 8764

Vulcan Defense Directorate Vessel T'Jal, Near Alpha Centauri

The main bridge viewer abruptly succumbed to a wash of static, failing along with the main bridge lights. Despite the suddenly dimmed illumination, Captain Vanik could see the young subaltern's eyes widen momentarily in an unaccustomed display of emotion.

He could hardly blame the young officer, of course, considering that circumstances -- not to mention Vulcan's commitment to defending her Coalition allies from alien attack -- had just forced her to take part in firing upon Vulcan vessels that had been hijacked by an extraordinarily pernicious and lethal adversary.

"Our life-support functions have just shut down, Captain," Subaltern T'Pelek said, recovering her equanimity as her training reasserted itself. "Along with the helm and the propulsion and tactical systems. I can access neither the backup systems nor the tertiary redundancies."

It was a most vexing and logic-defying problem. Vanik had planned to solve it from a safe distance after the T'Jal's sister ship, the Toth, had experienced an apparently identical shipwide systems failure only a few lirt'k earlier. Unfortunately, whatever effect had just immobilized both vessels had a far longer reach than Vanik had realized.

"Contact the rest of the task force," Vanik said, swiveling his seat toward the comm station. Most of the task force had already gone to warp, bound for Vulcan, but they could be recalled very quickly to render aid.

"Captain, the communications grid is not responding either," Communications Officer Voris said a moment later after checking his board. "The subspace bands are presently unavailable to us."

"Another vessel has just appeared on the sensors," Altern Stak reported from one of the forward science-monitoring stations that was apparently still functional. "It fits the profile of a Klingon battle cruiser."

Another Klingon vessel, Vanik thought, not surprised to find that the threat that the T'Jal and the Toth had been dispatched to address still lurked nearby, like a hungry le-matya stalking the sunbaked plains of Vulcan's Forge in search of prey.

"Why did we not detect this vessel earlier?" Vanik asked, his tone measured.

"It is difficult to tell, Captain," said Stak, still staring into his hooded viewer. "The orbits of a number of dark, icy cometary bodies intersect this vicinity. Perhaps the Klingon vessel was concealed behind one of these bodies."

And deployed its weapon against both us and the Toth from that place of concealment, Vanik thought. It was reasonable to assume that this was the very same weapon that had just induced a pair of D'Kyr-class Vulcan ships to wipe out a peaceful human convoy near the Alpha Centauri system, leaving the Vulcan Defense Force no choice other than to destroy two of its own vessels and crews.

"The Klingon vessel is changing position, Captain," Stak said. "Accelerating toward us."

"Helm and propulsion remain off-line," T'Pelek said.

"Is there any way to contact the Toth?" Vanik asked, addressing Voris.

"Negative, Captain."

It occurred to Vanik only then that he had never experienced quite such dire circumstances, either during his earlier tenure as commander of the science vessel Ti'Mur or during his six preceding decades of service to Vulcan's space-exploration efforts.

"Continue attempting to raise the Toth, Subaltern," he said. "I need to confer with Captain L'Vor to learn what countermeasures she is taking to prevent the capture of her ship."

At that moment a transitory burst of light brightened Altern Stak's side of the bridge. It had already faded by the time Vanik had turned to face the young science officer, whose features were frozen in a curiously un-Vulcan expression of dismay.

Vanik realized exactly which countermeasure Captain L'Vor had employed even before Stak said a word.

"The Toth has exploded, Captain. And the Klingon vessel has not yet opened fire."

Logical, Vanik thought. If their desire is to capture rather than merely to kill.

It was also logical to assume that L'Vor would not have acted out of panic, but merely out of the prudent necessity of preventing an enemy from acquiring sensitive Vulcan technology.

"Altern Stak," Vanik said as he arrived at a decision that was as unfortunate as it was both logical and inevitable. "Prepare our log buoy for launch."

"Immediately, Captain," Stak said.

The air was beginning to smell dank and stale to Vanik, although he knew that the failure of the life-support system had occurred far too recently to have allowed the ship's atmosphere to degrade significantly. But he also knew that the T'Jal would be a silent, life-hostile flying tomb soon enough if Stak failed to carry out his next order.

"And try to determine whether we can activate our autodestruct system," Vanik said, quietly grieving for every katra lost this day. "As the commander of the Toth just did."

Another good book in the relaunch!
By Luke
Overall, very well done:

The pros:

- Excellent job continuing to bridge the gap between Enterprise and TOS. Enterprise was in a tricky place as a prequel in a strongly established universe, and this book continues to work to bridge the gaps left behind after the early cancellation of the series. It is not perfectly in line with all trek ever written, but then with hundreds of books, that is an impossible task nowadays.
- Good continuation of the Trip-T'Pol connection without making this a sappy love story where everything works out magically for the couple. I like the emphasis on the dynamic between Trip's sense of service and his love for T'Pol.
- Good nod to those of us in the fan base who like what TOS was known for, subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, social commentary. It continues well with the Enterprise series' relation to modern times.
- Good level of plot complexity.
- Overall, good character development with an interesting plot; this is exactly what I want from trek.

The cons:

- More depth into the subplots would have improved this book.
- The writer is toying a careful line between rushing the plot and keeping the story fast paced.

This is the best book in the relaunch series thus far. This is a must for anyone who likes Enterprise. I can only hope that the next book in this series comes out quicker; I get impatient waiting for the next step in Enterprise.

Very good "Enterprise" entertainment
By Roger J. Buffington
This story is set in the "Enterprise" era in which Earth has only recently achieved interstellar travel and Enterprise is the first Warp 5 Earth starship. The Coalition of Planets (Earth, Vulcan, Tellar, Andoria) is faced with a deadly war with the Romulan Star Empire. This novel is the second in what I presume will eventually be a three novel set that essentially tells the story of the Earth-Romulan conflict so often referred to in all of the Star Trek series. This novel does not conclude the war, by the way, thus I assume that a third novel will be forthcoming.

Star Trek enthusiasts will note that this novel follows the "Enterprise" version of the Romulans and Earth's contact with them, which is significantly different from the story told in The Original Series. In the "Enterprise" version the Romulans seem to lead Earth in technology, including Warp Drive technology. By contrast, in the Original Series, the Romulans still do not have Warp Drive although they do have other advances over Earth, mainly the plasma weapon and of course cloaking technology. (My understanding of The Original Series is that the Romulans acquire warp drive from the Klingons, perhaps as a trade for cloaking technology.)

Despite the inconsistency, this story is great fun, and ably continues the "Enterprise" saga from where it left off at the end of that series. In this novel the Earth-Romulan war is in full swing, and Earth is getting the worst of it. More would be telling (no spoilers here).

The characterizations are excellent and ring true with the roles that were developed in the Enterprise series, particularly Trip and T'Pol. We also learn a great deal about the young T'Pau, who was featured in The Original Series in the Amok Time episode. (First episode, second season).

The Kindle version of this novel is well done, with no issues about formatting.

Recommended for Star Trek fans, particularly for those who, like me, particularly liked the "Enterprise" series. RJB.

Not worth the wait
By Kindle Customer
First, I would like to thank Amazon for lowering the price of the Kindle edition after I pre-ordered and paid the regular price. Nice to know the company appreciates customer loyalty.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Beneath the Raptor's Wing" and the books leading up to the Romulan War saga. Unfortunately, "To Brave the Storm" does not live up to the quality and excitement of its predecessors. The story feels rushed and disjointed. Months pass where nothing happens. And when something finally does happen, the story picks up after the incident, unlike Raptor's Wing were we are taken into the heart of the conflict. This book should have been filled with exciting space battles and undercover intrigue. Instead, it felt like a 600 page novel trimmed down to 300 pages with the most exciting chapters left out.

A perfect example is how the author and editors decided to deal with Trip. I'm about to give away a major spoiler here, so stop reading if you want to be surprised. In the prior novels we were always show how Trip escaped death defying cliffhangers, like his escape pod heading for a gravitic mine at the end of "Kobayashi Maru". Not so in this novel. During the final confrontation between the Coalition and Romulan fleets Trip escapes from the Romulan flagship in an escape pod. He is given a device that he believes to be a homing beacon. Once activated, it counts down to zero and that last thing Trip sees is a blinding flash of light. We later discover his escape pod has been destroyed during the battle. Twenty-five years later we discover Trip is alive and well living on Vulcan with T'Pol. No mention is given as to how he escaped. This is typical of the "let's pull a rabbit out of the hat" mentality of this novel.

Perhaps some day the publisher will come out with a special expanded edition of "To Brave the Storm", including all the important parts left out of this edition. Until then, we are left with a half-told, unimaginative story about what should have been one of the most exciting times in the history of Star Trek.

Power System Transients: Parameter DeterminationFrom CRC Press

Despite the powerful numerical techniques and graphical user interfaces available in present software tools for power system transients, a lack of reliable tests and conversion procedures generally makes determination of parameters the most challenging part of creating a model.

Illustrates Parameter Determination for Real-World Applications

Geared toward both students and professionals with at least some basic knowledge of electromagnetic transient analysis, Power System Transients: Parameter Determination summarizes current procedures and techniques for the determination of transient parameters for six basic power components: overhead line, insulated cable, transformer, synchronous machine, surge arrester, and circuit breaker. An expansion on papers published in the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, this text helps those using transient simulation tools (e.g., EMTP-like tools) to select the optimal determination method for their particular model, and it addresses commonly encountered problems, including:

  • Lack of information
  • Testing setups and measurements that are not recognized in international standards
  • Insufficient studies to validate models, mainly those used in high-frequency transients
  • Current built-in models that do not cover all requirements

Illustrated with case studies, this book provides modeling guidelines for the selection of adequate representations for main components. It discusses how to collect the information needed to obtain model parameters and also reviews procedures for deriving them. Appendices summarize updated techniques for identifying linear systems from frequency responses and review capabilities and limitations of simulation tools. Emphasizing standards, this book is a clear and concise presentation of key aspects in creating an adequate and reliable transient model.
