But, what does this really mean to an organization? How does this energy and enthusiasm impact a person’s daily activities at work?

Innovation wins customers, creates competitive advantage, and increases profit for organizations. But it’s also a notoriously risky venture to enter into, resulting in extremely low success rates and reluctance on the part of investors and decision-makers to support it. Does innovation have to be so risky and unpredictable?

I’m attacking these issues head on by articulating a vision of a reliable, repeatable, and structured approach for driving innovation in organizations.

This vision is shaped by five basic insights about innovation.

1. Innovation is a discipline, not a mystery.

Practicing innovation is not a mystery, contrary to what most people believe. Innovation is a discipline. It can be planned, practiced, improved, and excelled at. It can be formalized as a disciplined process. We can approach the practice of innovation (creating new products, services, and customer experiences) like a science, with a set of practical and rigorous methods, tools, and frameworks.

2. Innovation process needs clear modes, mindsets, and methods.

Modes provide innovators the focus necessary to deal with complex innovation challenges. Mindsets provide them with clear ways of thinking to fully understand challenges and appropriately conceive responses. Methods facilitate step-by-step actions to reach desired outcomes and end goals. This way of framing structured innovation is particularly valuable for innovators to effectively work together as teams.

3. Four primary forces shape innovations.

The primary forces that shape successful innovations are business, technology, design, and society. Business force relates to the question of what is viable in the market -- where are the market gaps and how to fill them. Technology force looks for what is possible with new emerging technologies and how to create new offerings. Design force asks the question of what is desirable for people and how to create humanized solutions. Society force is focused on what is sustainable for the community and the environment. Integrating these forces produce innovations that deliver higher user and economic value.

4. Innovations need collaboration and teamwork.

Innovations use structured and disciplined processes in which all stakeholders participate. For example, engineers, technologists, business analysts, strategists, researchers, designers, social scientists, community members, and even end-users participate in the process. Collaborative thinking at many levels of the organization is needed to conceive reliable solutions.

5. The same generic process benefits many diverse projects.

A generalized innovation process -- comprehensively conceived for observing, reframing, ideating, prototyping, and planning -- can be used to develop a wide variety of concepts like products, services, experiences, messages, channels, business models, or strategies. It can also support the needs of various types of organizations -- corporate businesses, social organizations, governments, entrepreneurs, or networked organizations.

Mostly a pitch for consulting services, but some useful information

This is a book I wanted to like, but it is so superficially written that I can only give it two stars. On a generous day, I might have given it three stars, but not any more.

101 design methods turns out to be 101 tools for the innovation process (from initial stage all the way through to commercialization). The whole process is covered but it is fair to say that the focus in around the prototype stage. If you have read a book about design consultancy IDEO you know pretty much the type of work described in this book (anthropological methods, Post-it notes, etc.)

Each method gets two pages, which are identically structured:
* 10% description of method. Unfortunately this section is far too short. Sadly the author provides absolutely no references. Instead he takes credit as if these methods were novel. You might think that in a book for practitioners, references are not so important. Fair response, but at the very least there should have been some references for further readings.
* 35% picture. This is generally an illustrative picture. Good.
* 20% case study. It is nice with case studies even though they are written up in a too sanitized way. In fact, the section is often a repetition of the description of the method. The most typical case study is a not-for-profit service.
* 25% practical steps. The steps are always almost identical: identity, analyze, report. This section is extremely tedious and repetitive. Totally useless material.
* 10% filler material. Also not useful.

I seriously question the author's judgement when describing the methods in this manner. Personally, I don't like the very mechanical approach of presenting the tools. Still, there will definitely be some methods that you would like to look further into. For this reason the book could have been a three star book, if the author would have given the reader some advice for further readings. If the case studies would have been more illustrative the book would probably be worth four stars.

The book is printed in full color on pretty good paper. The layout of the book feels modern and professional.

I am on my third try to read this book and once more i am giving up and this time completely. I find the ideas presented by the author so disagreeable and precisely counter to innovation. This is a book on innovation by committee, innovation for wannabe innovators who have no clue or even any capability for innovation - much like trying to teach pigs how to fly. You would have better luck trying to teach ostriches how to fly - at least they have some semblance of wings. Its a good thing this notion of innovation was not around when the rocket was invented, the air plane, lockheed skunk works, the steam engine, the computer, even the web, html, and arpanet/internet. All of them most likely would have died a quiet unknown death through suffocation by committee. You want to have innovation in your organization ? Then let lose the dreamers, leave them alone , and keep the fuddie-duddies away from them.

As a consultant helping teams through innovation processes I found this book to be a wonderful compendium of frameworks and techniques to help focus ideas and processes. For a consultant or trainer in business or technology innovation this book provides a ready resource of methods that can be used to help uncover, unclutter or focus thinking. For teams on their own the book can be a ready resource to guide the innovation process; what to do next in innovating new products or services. The book proposes a seven step framework that helps you walk through the innovation modes: Sense intent, Know Context, Know People, Frame Insights, Explore concepts, Frame Solutions and Realize offerings. It goes into great depth for each mode providing method and technique that will help inspire new ways of thinking about how to approach an innovation challenge.

Useful, but not for novices

This book is up-to-date, nicely organized, and full of useful information. It is intended to be of value to readers who have some general programming experience and is, by extension, ideal for those who already have some knowledge of SAS programming. My only complaint, and it is not an insignificant one, is that the writing is often unclear. I find too many passages that I understand only because I know quite a bit about SAS already. I fear that other readers with less experience will end up puzzled or misinformed. This is a good SAS book, but it is not a good "first" SAS book.

Not bad, but definitely not good either

The book is useful if you are not new to SAS, however there are definitely better written books available. Comparing a code (given as example) and its output are often hard to follow as the text says nothing about the data file structure. The spelling errors (admittedly few) are very annoying. One doesn't expect them in professionally written text.

About the Author

Dr. Larry Elowitz is the Carl Vinson Professor of Political Science at Georgia College and State University located in Milledgeville, Georgia. Born in Elizabeth, NJ,. Dr. Elowitz received his B.Ed. and M.A. from the University of Miami (Fla.) and his Ph.D. in Political Science/International Relations from the University of Florida. He has taught the following courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels: Introduction to American Government, American Foreign Policy, International Problems, Terrorism, National Security Policy, the Presidency, and Environmental Politics. Dr. Elowitz was Visiting Professor of National Security Affairs at the United States Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Alabama.

To clarify - I was looking for a simple government-refresher book to brush up for the Foreign Service Exam. I was not looking for a detailed explanation about the inner-workings of the Federal government.

It was exactly as I expected, and I got it for a good value. So while not terribly interesting reading, I found it to be an excellent, simple refresher.

About the Author

Steven A. Beebe is Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Texas State University. He served as Chair of his department at Texas State for twenty-eight years and concurrently as Associate Dean for twenty-five years. Steve is the author or co-author of twelve widely used communication books, most of which have been through multiple editions (including Russian and Chinese editions), as well as numerous articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. He has been a Visiting Scholar at both Oxford University and Cambridge University in England. He made international headlines when conducting research at Oxford; he discovered a manuscript that was the partial opening chapter of a book that was to be co-authored with J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis called Language and Human Nature. Steve has traveled widely in Europe and Asia, and has played a leadership role in establishing new communication curricula in Russian universities. He has received his university’s highest awards for research and twice for service, has been recognized as Honors Professor of the year, and was named Outstanding Communication Professor by the National Speaker’s Association. In 2013 he served as President of the National Communication Association, the largest professional communication association in the world. His passions include his family and a lifelong love of music; he is a pianist and organist and a struggling cellist.

 

Susan J. Beebe’s professional interests and expertise encompass both oral and written communication. Sue has co-authored three books and has published a number of articles and teaching materials in both English and communication studies. She has received the Texas State University Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching and in Service and the College of Liberal Arts Awards for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities, in Teaching, and in Service. After serving as Director of Lower-Division Studies in English for eleven years, Sue retired in 2014 from the Department of English at Texas State. An active volunteer in the community of San Marcos, Texas, Sue was the founding coordinator of the San Marcos Volunteers in Public Schools Program and has served on the San Marcos School Board and the Education Foundation Board. In 1993 she was named the statewide Friend of Education by the Texas Classroom Teachers’ Association; in 2000 the San Marcos school district presented her with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Sue enjoys reading, traveling, and caring for the Beebe family cats, Luke and Bouncer. Sue and Steve have two sons: Mark, a graduate of Rice University; and Matt, a graduate of Southwestern University and a middle school teacher in nearby Austin.

 

Mark V. Redmond is an Associate Professor of Communication Studies at Iowa State University. In 2012 he received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching. Besides this book, Mark has authored an introductory text on communication theory and research, edited an upper-level text in interpersonal communication, and co-authored a public speaking text. His research focuses on social decentering (taking into account another person’s thoughts, feelings, perspectives, etc.), one of the themes incorporated in this text. His research studies include expectations associated with male–female relationships, social decentering’s impact in marriage, initial interactions between strangers, adaptation in interpersonal interactions, and intercultural communication competence. He is a Cyclone sports fan with an avocation for playing basketball at least three times a week (despite an aging hook shot). An unaccomplished piano and guitar player, he loves composing and writing songs and vows to someday complete the musical he’s been working on for twenty years. Mark and his wife Peggy have three children: Beth, a graduate of the University of Iowa and Mount Mercy University; Nicholas, a graduate of Iowa State University and McCormick Theological Seminary, and Eric, a graduate of Iowa State University and Northwest Missouri State University.

Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.
