About the Author
Marjane Satrapi was born in Rasht, Iran. She now lives in Paris, where she is a regular contributor to magazines and newspapers throughout the world, including "The New Yorker, "and "The New York Times." She is the author of "Embroideries, Chicken with Plums, "and several children's books. She cowrote and codirected the animated feature film version of "Persepolis."

A great coming of age story of a girl building her own identity and finding out what it means to be true to yourself in times of political turmoil and religious extremism in Iran.

I particularly enjoyed how Satrapi depicted the emotional chaos brought by her time spent in Vienna and the challenges of feeling foreign everywhere, both at "home" and abroad.

My favorite part was when she muses about all the rules Iranians had to follow for the government to leave them alone and how worrying about being arrested for breaking the rules kept them from worrying about the things that truly matter: civil rights, human rights, freedom of speech. It is applicable to so many other countries, not just those with repressive regimes but those facing extreme violence, those were the media fills up the space with inane content.

It is a great book, easy to follow, even for someone with very little background on Iran and its rich history, a story that begs us to ask more questions and educate ourselves.

Really fantastic. Couldn't put it down. If you like personal stories or have any interest in Iran and/or even the complexity of what's going on now in the Middle East, I highly recommend. It won't explain all the history, etc. to you per se, but it offers an inside account of being a child and young adult from a smart, endearing, politically aware family (and more, a family who's history is intertwined with Iranian politics) who's experiencing the effects of the Revolution throughout her childhood and young adult years. Also offers a super interesting account of young adult counterculture Vienna in the 80s. Graphics and writing are both great. Satrapi is a gifted story teller. Her parents (who are a big part of the story) must be very proud. Was sad when it ended....

AP World History Review: A Good Read

Persepolis was the most interesting biography I have read in the last few years. I loved how she made it into a comic book. It seemed to lighten or darken the mood and got you more into the book than one normally would with an autobiography. Satrapi was good about explaining her thoughts and what was going on. It helped me understand what was going on, better. Overall, I had never truly understood what exactly happened in the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq-Iran war. Because it was in her POV, I had a good outlet and experience for what actually happened. It was not the same type of information one would get from a researched history. Satrapi could write about what her neighbors said, as well as her parents. Because it is about herself, it was also more clear why people did what they did and what it was like to live in a situation like hers.
Persepolis was a good tool for a better understanding of earlier modern Iran and its conflicts. Not only does she tell you about wha twas going on in Iran, she also tells of a few parts of Europe. The racism and separation people participated in when they found out of her Iranian upbringing. People saw Iranians as violent and cruel as well as oppressive of women. She tried to get them to understand that not all were like that, and still, the stereotypes were not completely true in the first place. Satrapi does a great job at portraiting real life struggles and how she got through them. It gives students a new perspective on how other people live and what a revolution and war can feel like at the front. Students here do not really experience this type of thing. Understanding the circumstances and what people lived through can help a student understand why different choices were or were not made. Therefore understanding a people and time period more.

Perfect for me, and quite possibly, you...

I started playing at 15, put in many hundreds of hours on worthless, stumbling in the dark (pre-internet) "practice". I plateaued fairly quickly because I always tried to play WAY too fast and basically learned really well how to play sloppy, mistake-filled, unimaginative licks. I kept at it off and on for many years and then gave up about a decade ago.

Fast forward to about a month ago. Now, at 45, I decide I'm gonna give guitar another go. I started watching youtube videos, reading online lessons, etc, and I learned a couple things. One was that I need to practice S-L-O-W-E-R , but just as important, I need to learn the fretboard. That's where this book came in. It is EXACTLY what I was after. A concise, guitar oriented, method to learn my way around a fretboard, and at a price you can't beat. When you include the very tasty licks for all the 5 positions, and the authors excellent advice on how to incorporate the licks into your playing while making them your own, well, you've got yourself a steal of a deal in my opinion.

Thanks again to Mr. Alexander for the effort he put into this work. I am confident that now that I have the tools to do it right, I will stick with it this time.

When you have read as many reviews as I have , they get redundant, but I am going to give this a try.
I am 66 years old and just started a year ago to learn this wonderful instrument.
You can spend countless hours (as I have ) searching the internet for " AH HAA " moments.
This E-Book abounds with them.

This ebook provides a wealth of information about the caged guitar system. It provides diagrams of all the forms for chords and arpeggios, and gives ideas on how to apply it. The information is good, it comes from unquestionably monster players

I don't think this format conveys the information as effectively as a text book style format would.

And the biggest complaint with the kindle version I purchased is that whenever there are musical examples the text refers to the workbook, but the workbook is not included, so there is a big disconnect there. The information is good, it comes from unquestionably monster players, but the format is an interview style, not a straight music text style which is not the best presentation for conveying this kind of information.

Poor Audio recording, mixing and quality

There is SOME decent information here, but id you are going to sell an AUDIO recording, PLEASE record it profesionally. And don't mix music in at the end when the subject is still talking and have the music drown out what the subject is saying.
The recording quality is horrendous! This is very difficult to listen to and when Sheppard starts playig sax, it blows out my eardrums because the interview portion is so low.
It's really too bad because this isn't a bad idea, but the execution was very poor. The interviewer needs some experience interviewing, and needs to hire an editor, a recordist and a mixer. This effort is mediocre at best.

This is an excellent book. I highly recommend it to all aspiring jazz musicians. It will truly answer all or any questions you have about jazz improvisation. You won't regret reading this book.

Deb Elkink has gone deep on one theme in Chesterton, which illuminates the rest of his writing. The branches of the tree cover a wide area indeed. But she has also plunged into one particular text: Chesterton's rollicking tale, The Flying Inn. With her essay, "The Seven Moods of Gilbert," she has presented a more penetrating analysis of this novel than has ever been written.                                                      Dale Ahlquist, President, American Chesterton Society 

I warmly recommend Deb Elkink's excellent study, particularly admirable in giving Chesterton a close reading of his imagery and in convincingly linking particular aesthetic effects to a convincing grasp of their religious meaning. About the Author
Deb Elkink first encountered G.K. Chesterton when at seminary, where his symbolism of the tree caught her fancy and his broad reference to preceding literature plunged her into the British classics. An award-winning novelist (The Third Grace), Deb now lives in southern Alberta, Canada, writing from her country cottage on the banks of a creek overgrown with a tangle of willow, pine, and poplar trees.

Getting to the root of G.K. Chesterton's tree symbolism.

Most of the analysis on G. K. Chesterton’s work has focused on his non-fiction books, predominantly Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. With Roots & Branches: The Symbol of the Tree in the Imagination of G.K. Chesterton award-winning novelist Deb Elkink wants to broaden that focus to include a look at Chesterton’s fiction.

The last chapter provides an overview of Chesterton’s six themes: home and journey, the person and God, light, the church, the ladder and the cross. Within these themes, Elkink notes: “The tree becomes an allegory for salvation. It acts as Chesterton’s ‘visual aid’ or wholistic model of the spiritual process by picturing the incarnational, redeeming work of Christ and the continuing sacramental presence of God in the world.”

Elkink demonstrates, through careful, thoughtful and thorough research, how the symbolic use of the tree took root in short stories Chesterton wrote as a youth, grew in use in his early novels and matured in his later works.

Roots & Branches: The Symbol of the Tree in the Imagination of G. K. Chesterton provides an insightful and informative look at prolific and often paradoxical writer. Both fans of Chesterton and those who know little about him will be well-served by Elkink’s analysis.

If there were any shortcomings, it would be the book’s style and layout.

Roots & Branches began as and remains an academic thesis. While I’m aware of the reasons behind the choice, I think the average reader would have been better served with a less academic approach.

Don’t let these shortcomings deter you from reading Roots & Branches. While they can make the book tough to get through at times, I’d strongly suggest persevering. Roots & Branches is worth finishing.

I had often heard great quotes...

I had often heard great quotes of the prolific journalist and theologian G.K. Chesterton (GKC) but knew little of his fiction. However, I am a sucker for symbolism and paradox, so my interest was tweaked when I was introduced to Deb Elkink's book. I also noticed that respected scholars were praising Elkink's work (including Dale Ahlquist, president of the American Chesterton Society) and that she is an award-winning author, so I became even more interested...

I had heard that his half-dozen or so novels and collections of short stories could prove perplexing in meaning, but Elkink managed to save me the confusion by untangling this meaning to show the metaphysical connotation beneath. The book opens with the author painting a picture of GKC's life in a concise and interesting bio. In the analysis portion, Elkink focuses on the single image of a tree and takes it from his childhood experiences through his final fiction, showing how his exposure to the classics of English literature and the Bible were foundational for his writing.

And then there was the surprise “Part ll” of Roots & Branches, where she shows how Chesterton told about his own conversion to faith through one character in one chapter of the novel THE FLYING INN—a sort of fictional “conversion narrative.” Has this aspect never been discovered before???

Now that my appetite is whet and I feel more prepared and fascinated, I am beginning to collect GKC's fiction as I continue to watch one of his fictional characters, Father Brown, come to life in the BBC mystery series and will get around to watching "Manalive" on day too (a movie made from his novel of the same name).

CONCLUSION: I found Elkink's book was a great way to be introduced to this literary giant's life and fiction!

an excellent Hope

Maggie hope is an excellent writer and she takes the period of the thirties and the struggle of women at that time and of a girl growing up at that time and creates a story which has been related many times but which she develops in an entertaining way to someone who was not born in that time and has not lived in that part of the world.
