Excelent and very personal lesson from Grisman

Imagine that you're in a small lesson room at your local music store. You're tuning up your mandolin waiting for your teacher to come in. The door opens and your teacher for today's lesson is David Grisman! That's the feeling I get when listening to and working with these CD's. It truely feels like you're sitting down one on one with the master and he's showing you his stuff.
Sure, it's David teaching you his own tunes, but there's more to it than that. He's also teaching you the reasons why he does what he does. He teaches harmoney leads on songs like "Dawg's Bull" but he also teaches why those harmony leads work and how to write your own.
One of my favorite sections is for the song "Minor Swing" where he discusses chord substitutions. This is just good basic jazz music theory presented in a meaningful way and applied to an actual song rather than just presented as a theory.
That brings up another point. The printed music is just the basics of the songs. When David talks about chord substitutions and so on you'll need to get out your notebook and write down what he's saying on the CD because many times it's not written in the book. But that's another reason why this feels like a private lesson. You'll have to listen, take notes, and practice to get the most out of this series, just like a real lesson.
So get out your instrument, tuner, metronome, notebook, and CD player. You're about to have about 6+ hours of intense mandolin lessons. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Fairly advanced lessons, not for beginners

I am learning mandolin after playing violin for many years; I can pick out a tune pretty easily but am not familiar with chords or mandolin technique. These CDs and the book contain a wealth of knowledge, but they are pretty advanced. There are discussions of double stops, slides, and different hand positions (first, second) within the first 10 minutes or so. Also, the previous reviewer is correct that you need to take copious notes. There are a lot of quick references to things like "third finger on the 8th fret, second finger on the third fret of the fourth string," etc., which are hard to process quickly. It would be wonderful if Dave Grisman could put together some simpler lessons! I am giving this four stars because of the wealth of knowledge contained in the CDs, but I would give it three stars for someone at my skill level, and less for rank beginners.

Excellent new book on leadership!

This is a great resource for any leader, Christian or not, and is both enjoyable to read and full of practical, applicable information.

Deeply Impacting

This book is a great read for those interested in spiritual leadership. It is written with warmth and sheds a gentle and profoundly new light into some standard understandings of the role and function of leadership. Of significance were the thoughts on the importance of hearing the divine voice for internal validation, not the varying opinions of the masses. Also of importance were thoughts on the length of preparation time for healthy leadership, and the link between submission and obedience and authentic leadership. This book is best read devotionally over time and each chapter almost demands a slow, contemplative and prayerful penetration. I want to give this to all the young leaders I train for ministry. It will have lasting influence!

This is one of those rare books that combines spiritual depth and insight with practical, business-like applications.

Terrific collection

Leslie Jamison's "The Empathy Exams" has deservedly been praised by critics, but that's not what brought me to buying and reading it. I'd read some of the essays here in various publications. Before you buy the book, I recommend a quick Google search to find one or two of the essays floating around the 'net; read those and you'll get a good idea if you want to continue with Jamison for a full book. I hope you do; it's a terrific collection, as I said.

Am I the only person who didn't like this?

The more concrete essays (like the one about Morgellons disease or the one about the Barkley Marathons) are quite good. The rest of them are well-written, but I couldn't get past the author's tone. And I can't even quite put my finger on it, but let me try.

Jamison says, "Part of me has always craved a pain so visible--so irrefutable and physically inescapable--that everyone would have to notice."

Pain is a very personal thing, and these are a bunch of essays about different kinds of pain. And no matter whose pain it ultimately is, Jamison finds a way to turn it around and bring it back to her. Even in the Morgellons disease essay, she ends basically wondering if she herself has Morgellons. I didn't care for this. It feels like appropriation.

Sure, Jamison addresses this almost directly in her last essay, and sure, maybe I'm one of those people who don't feel comfortable with the expression of pain, but all that means is that I didn't find the book as enjoyable as I wanted to.

This quote by Susan Sontag serves as a central tenet of this book of essays. Jamison's intent is to explore the ways that empathy allows each of us to understand the pain of the other as a part of your own. In accepting that merging of her boundaries, she learns the underlying unity of pain. "No trauma has discrete edges" within the person. But also trauma cannot occur in isolation.

I respect the underlying premise of these essays, and I think the goal is reached in pockets of Jamison's prose. However her line of thought is often distorted or too broadly amorphous. The language is not easy to read in a sitting. Ease of transition is not a necessary element for me in judging writing, however she can be just too confusing. I understand the trope she is painting as the observed sufferers are seen as part of the observer, but it is often done in too abrupt a transition. Although her intent is clearly not to offer her own pain as primary or unique, it appears often enough to be tiring and ultimately overdone.

The topics of the essays are in fact quite fascinating in scope. She explores such diverse topics as those people who act as patients to train medical students to sufferers of the rare and controversial Morgollons disease in which people find crystals and threads emerging from within them. The chopping of the chapters with her philosophical musings tend to lead the mind off the frame of the topic rather than more deeply in exploration. All in all it felt as if she just couldn't get out of her own way which is a shame because this book held a lot of promise..

Rough Guide vs. Lonely Planet

My friend and I visited Thailand earlier this month, and we conducted an experiment in the process: I used Rough Guide and she used Lonely Planet. We came up with similar trip plans, and we both turned to the Internet to fill in some blanks before squaring away our itinerary. Once on the road, we found ourselves using Rough Guide slightly more often than Lonely Planet.

Both guides are well organized and reasonably complete, but the Rough Guide's color maps are easier to read. While LP has more detail, it comes at the expense of readability, especially since the maps are not in color. The Rough Guide fails to adequately discuss elephant parks and other activity destinations around Chiang Mai. While LP does a better job, it still isn't complete, so I recommend using the Internet to get everything sorted out.

We did a back-to-back comparison of recommended Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, and we found the LP recommendation to be superior. However, several restaurant listings are the same in both guides, and we did not encounter a bad Rough Guide recommendation on our journey. We found the Rough Guide's accommodation listings to be more helpful in Chiang Mai and Ko Phi Phi, but the LP recommendations are not lacking. I recommend consulting TripAdvisor to get a fuller picture of available options, as neither guide provides an exhaustive listing.

I like that the Rough Guide has full color and more photos, but the Lonely Planet guide excels at legibility. The Rough Guide switches between a couple fonts, one of which is quite difficult to read, and text does not always flow up-to-down, left-to-right in its two-column layout. LP is the clear winner here.

Both guides are overall winners. Generally speaking, I recommend Lonely Planet for Bangkok and destinations to the north and Rough Guide for destinations to the south. Rough Guide does have the advantage of not being LP; there is an unfortunate number of tourists who never try something that wasn't printed in an LP guide first. Don't be one of them and you'll have a great time in Thailand!

Key to an awesome trip

I brought this book for my Nov 2012 Thailand trip. I waited until the current issue came out (a month before my trip). Totally worth the money. Rough Guide was perfect for my Southern Thailand itinerary. I went to Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga and of course, Bangkok. I stayed in all the recommended spots from the book except at Koh Phi Phi. Everything in the book was accurate. I love how Rough Guide adds in their opinion. I picked up the Lonely Planet version for Thailand in the book store after my trip and noticed they were less opinionated and just stated facts. It also didn't have as much content as the Rough Guide. All the travelers I met during the trip used Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide actually had different hostels/hotels they recommend and I believe they had even more than Lonely Planet. The maps were easy to read. My Rough Guide was able to take a lot of abuse during the trip. If you are planning on going to Thailand, I would definitely recommend this book over others.

Great for browsing, only fair for actual research

Like most guidebooks, it's great for browsing, but it's already out of date. As a travel blogger, I find myself using it occasionally to round out (or sometimes confirm) a trip. It's rarely left the house (mainly because I'll take notes and e-mail them to myself), and it's heavy. That can't fairly be helped, but the font can - a light sans-serif font that's difficult to read in lower light. The smaller font size doesn't help either.

If you're planning an epic trip of Thailand, or prefer to browse travel guides, this is fine. If your trip will be less than a couple of weeks long, this is overkill.

About the Author

Stephen Sweet is Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Ithaca College and formerly the associate director of the Cornell Careers Institute, a Sloan Center for the Study of Working Families. He has written a number of articles on the challenges confronting working families, focusing on the issues of concern to dual career couples across the life course. His studies have appeared in a variety of publications, including the New Directions in Life Course Research, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Innovative Higher Education, The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, Journal of College Student Development, and Community, Work, and Family. Stephen’s other book with SAGE is The Work-Family Interface. He has also published The Handbook of Work and Family with co-authors Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Ellen Ernst Kossek;  Managing Careers in the New Risk Economy, with co-investigator Phyllis Moen; College and Society: An Introduction to the Sociological Imagination, and Data Analysis with SPSS: A First Course in Applied Statistics. Stephen has been the recipient of a Sloan Officers Grant to study the effects of corporate downsizing on dual earner couples.

Peter Meiksins is a Professor of Sociology at Cleveland State University. He is the author of many articles on the sociology of work, including studies of the work experiences of engineers and part-time work in professional technical occupations and essays on labor process theory, professional work in comparative perspective, and contemporary labor relations. His work has appeared in a variety of journals, including Work and Occupations, Theory and Society, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Work, Employment and Society, and Sociological Quarterly. He is the author of Putting Work in Its Place: A Quiet Revolution (with Peter Whalley) and of Engineering Labour: Technical Workers in Comparative Perspective (with Chris Smith). Peter’s other books are Rethinking the Labor Process (with Mark Wardell and Tom Steiger) and Rising From the Ashes: Labor in the Age of Global Capitalism (with Ellen Wood and Michael Yates). He and co-investigator Peter Whalley received a major grant from the Sloan Foundation to study “Flexible Work for Technical Professionals.” Peter’s current research concerns the sociology of design work (a study of the work of graphic designers, industrial designers and interior designers). This research has been supported by a Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline grant from the American Sociological Foundation.
