About the Author
George R. Strakosch was president and founder of George R. Strakosch & Associates, an elevator consulting firm from which he has since retired. He has been associated with Elevator World magazine from 1987 to the present, where he was a technical director and worked with their Editorial and Educational Departments. He has been involved in the elevator industry for more than fifty years, thirty of which were spent with the Otis Elevator Company, ten of which were spent as an associate with the engineering firm of Jaros, Baum & Bolles, and twenty-three of which have been with Elevator World.

Robert S.Caporale is Senior Vice President and Editor of Elevator World. Before joining the magazine in 1992, he worked for twenty-seven years as an elevator system designer, project manager, and associate with the engineering firm of Jaros, Baum & Bolles and later as vice president and director of the Transport Systems Group of Syska Hennessey Group. He was involved in various design phases of major elevator systems throughout the world, including the World Trade Center, the Bank of China in Hong Kong, the Sears Tower, and Broadgate Development in London.

turn off escalators ?

The opening chapters give a readily comprehensible history of the subject. We see how Otis demonstrated his early lift model in the 19th century. A wonder, it must have seemed to the onlookers. From this is traced the development of ever more capable lifts and escalators.

For the professional in this field, the rest of the text furnishes a useful overview, going up to recent models. For lifts, one main division is between hydraulic and cable operated. The hydraulic lifts are shown to be viable up to 6 stories.

Another type of moving platform is a horizontal belt on which people stand. This is also explained in the book. Its main instantiation seems to be in some airports.

Interestingly, the book never raises the question as to the ultimate usefulness of escalators. With the rise in obesity throughout the world, why not turn off the escalators? Make people who can walk, walk up and down the stairs. Sure, lifts are still available for traversing many floors, and for people in wheelchairs. But think outside the box.

About the Author

Don Casey credits the around-the-world voyage of Robin Lee Graham, featured in National Geographic in the late sixties, with opening his eyes to the world beyond the shoreline. After graduating from the University of Texas he moved to south Florida, where he began to spend virtually all his leisure time messing about in boats.

In 1983 he abandoned a career in banking to devote more time to cruising and writing. His work combining these two passions soon began to appear in many popular sailing and boating magazines. In 1986 he co-authored Sensible Cruising: The Thoreau Approach, an immediate best-seller, and the book responsible for pushing many would-be cruisers over the horizon.

Today Mr. Casey and his wife, Olga, often cruise aboard their own Old Boat--a 22-year-old, much-modified Allied Seawind. They've done all the work themselves, with no adult supervision.

I don't know where to begin thanking Casey and recommending him at the same time. A feeble attempt follows:
This is the MOST valuable of my 80 or 90 boatbuilding books, hands-down. It doesn't matter what construction material you are using, or what your level of expertise. At the very least, it is a fun, witty, and motivating book. Even if you come out of it with no more knowledge than when you started (I guarantee that will not happen), it will give you the necessary wisdom and motivation to stay the course. It was the first 'boat building' book I ever purchased, and it alone motivated me to stop dreaming about a boat, and to start building/rebuilding one. And it was to this book I turned whenever a project was frustrating (this is almost daily, for the uninitiated--and he explains this, too). It was also the book I used as a primary reference, and it served me very well in the rebuilding of two medium-sized boats. It has since served me equally well in the building of boats from plans, though you will need more than he offers for this (that does not mean instead of this, but in addition to his book, another will be necessary).
Whether you are going to build a boat from scratch, or you are going to refurbish an older boat (he makes a hard sell), this book MUST be read. If you have only one book on your shelf pertaining to the construction/reconstruction/maintenance, this should be it. You will never forget it, and you will recommend it to others as strongly as I am to you. Your boat will feel naked without it.

ESSENTIAL READING FOR BOATOWNERS--Index & Back Cover listed

I think I have over a hundred books on sailing and boating.
"This Old Boat" is my most recent addition, which I bought
simultaneously with another of Casey's books "Sailboat Hull and
Deck Repair". I consider them to be two of the most important
books for sailors that are boat owners.

One can take two routes with
boats, buying new and paying a fortune, or going the inexpensive route
and doing the work yourself. There is something to be said for each.
I'm a sailor, I don't like working on boats. I had my fill as a child
working on my Dad's boat. Nevertheless, I'm presently engaged in
refitting an awesome older boat to modern standards. I love every bit
of it.

Casey's books are essential references for me. I've managed
to pick things up from magazines and working on other boats over the
years, but I still found these books not only insightful and powerful
motivators for me. One job that I have been reluctant to do, a deck
modification project has suddenly become do-able for me. Reading his
book made it clear to me that these jobs are not as hard as they first
seem to be. It is difficult to cut up a nice looking deck, but if you
plan the project right, you can transform your deck layout for
single-handed sailing, fix a de-lamination problem and a multitude of
deck leaks all at one time.

I strongly recommend this book and his
Sailboat Hull and Deck Repair.

Buy these books. Map out a strategy
and then focus on one project at a time. Good luck and smooth
sailing.

No one knows if he ever succeeded, though, as all trace of Albrek and his followers simply vanished from history. Now, however, the dwarves must find the magical talisman that Albrek carried with him before their mines run dry, which would threaten the livelihood of the entire dwarf realm. And so the newly named wizard Alexander Taylor joins a familiar company of adventurers on a quest to discover what happened to Albrek, find his mythical tomb, and locate the lost talisman. Discovering Albrek's fate, however, may be the least of the adventurers' problems when they cross paths with an ancient, wandering paladin who has a taste for confrontation and paranoid belief that some great evil is working in all of the known lands. Alex and his friends must pass through the shadow of any empty oracle's tower, where a whispered legend is to about to come true, and strike out for the distant parts of Thraxon that are only spoken of in old tales and half-forgotten myths. Join Alex and his brave companions on an adventure that will test the limits of their courage.

A Great Pleasure

I love fantasy books but more and more they tend to get vulgar and worldly. Forman is able to tell a fascinating story and still keep it clean and even teaches a good morals in each of his books. I would have to say that Albrek's Tomb is my Favorite but is followed closely by Slathbogs Gold.

Excellent! Must read for adults and young adults! This author is really entertaining and weaves an impressive story.

Audio CD review

I read the book first before I bought a used version on audio CD (drat no audible version yet). I admit audible.com had me spoiled with only two parts to manage with "The Horn of Moran". However, Once I saw there was some used "Albrek's Tomb" audio CD's available at less than half the original cost, I went for it. It took a bit to buffer all the cd's to my computer, but then it transferred to my iphone quickly and off I went from there enjoying further great story reading from E.B. White. Yes, there were more breaks with the eleven cd's end being announced, but I loved E.B's voices, sound affects, and personalities he was able to bring to being, it barely caused me any issue. E.B really brings Alex and crew to life with Alex's voice showing he is still young and not fully sure of himself yet; Thrang's gruff dwarf voices, Kat's feminine voice, and many many others.
I had a slight giggle when one bit character sounded somewhat like Yoda. I will see if anyone else notices. It just made the reading that more fun. Also, I noted things as it was read that I didn't pick up from reading the book alone. So, yes, I would recommended purchasing the audio CD version of "Albrek's Tomb" for those who like E. B. White reading.

Heartwarming and Insightful.

First published in 1955, The Sweet Flypaper of Life, is a deft depiction of life in Harlem as seen through the eyes of Sister Mary Bradley.

Sympatheyically juxtaposed with stunning black & white photographs captured by master photographer Roy DeCarava, and astute text written by renowned poet Langston Hughes, it adroitly conveys the struggles, triumphs, and relationships of every day black people.

The marriage of these two genres birthed a photo-story that has reached lengedary status amongst both photographers and poets alike. Being a first of its time collaboration, DeCarava and Hughes, elite masters of their craft, unapologetically affirmed a gentler side of Harlem life of which was scarcely or never before documented.

Last re-printed in 1984, I wholeheartedly recommend you purchase a copy of this hard to find out of print masterpiece of if ever the chance arises. It is only then that you will truly appreciate what it means to be bathed fully by "The Sweet Flypaper of Life".

Wonderful photos and a beautiful story

This collaborative book between Hughes and De Carava is small and wonderful. The story by Hughes is a gentle tale of one woman's life in Harlem in 1955. It is richly illustrated with the beautiful photographs of Harlem family life by De Carava.
