Governance, Risk Management and Compliance-It Can't Happenn To Us...
By Lundberg
The elements of strong corporate governance are lucidly explained by author Rick Steinberg with the right balance between conceptual and practical. Too often books in this field are so conceptual as to be close to useless, or so academic as to bear little relation to the complexities of a fast moving real-life corporation. It also indicates an understanding of the costs and effort to get it right, the tradeoffs that must be made, and the scarcity of executive and Board time and comprehension, of complex fast-moving corporate entities. The inclusion of analysis of some of the current controverisies over Board practices--BP and HP for example--render it more alive and timely than many more stultifying entries. As a Chairman or CEO for over 25 years, I can appreciate the scope and practicality of this guide.

Makes it easy to understand a complex issue
By David1943
While it's never too late for a current CEO or board member to learn what their responsibilities are to their stockholders, I'd strongly recommend that every undergraduate and graduate business school include this book as required reading. It is written in language that everyone can understand. It includes many current examples of the right and wrong ways companies have approached this subject in a readable fashion that is not boring. Mr STEINBERG has done a masterful job making a subject that appears to most as a unnecessary evil that one has to find a way to deal with into an opportunity for success .

A "Must Read" for Risk and Compliance Executives
By Gordon M. Burnes
Rick Steinberg does a wonderful job describing the strategic underpinnings to a risk management program. Rick's vast knowledge of the subject and deep domain expertise are brought together to provide a framework for risk management to drive corporate success. He shows that risk management is much more than a 'check box' task for executives--it can be a source of tremendous shareholder value.

WELCOME TO MAKE5WISHES.COM

Hana just doesn’t fit in. At school, she feels like the invisible girl. (“No. Not invisible. Being invisible would’ve been cool. I just wasn’t worth noticing.”) And at home, she avoids her parents’ arguments by retreating to her bedroom, where she spends hours online, playing the part of various cool, smart, sexy, and popular alteregos, and kicks back with her all-time idol and very best (though only in her imagination) friend, rebel rocker Avril Lavigne. One night she runs across a mysterious website called Make5Wishes.com. Somehow, she can’t click away–and before she knows it, she’s ordered a package guaranteed to make dreams come true. But will it end up being a Pandora’s box? It all depends on the lovable but wily demon inside. Is Hana sure she knows what she wants? And does she know that what you want can be very different from what you get?

This book is a beautiful start to the series that introduces you to a lot of memorable moments that I felt was enjoyable. It was a shame this series did not last longer but from what you can read it is truly a stunning journey.

Story Stops Half Way Through to Make You Buy the Next One, If You Want to Find Out How it Ends
By James N Simpson
Let me firstly say I'm a huge fan of Avril Lavigne, I've got all her albums, she's one of the few modern era young musicians who actually writes her own songs and lyrics. It is obvious though, that the editor, book publishers or whoever should have insisted she play a bit heavier part in writing this thing, as it is simply a pretty mediocre storyline. On the first page, we get a message from Avril where she tells us she is excited at the opportunity to create a graphic novel. However what part she actually played is a bit ambiguous as the concept on the next page is claimed by someone called Camilla d-Errico. Camilla also claims to have done the art and written the thing with someone else called Joshua Dysart. So did Avril sit around a boardroom table with these guys and give suggestions for the plot, who knows. One's things for sure, that amazing lyric writing talent should have been used instead of the drivel d-Errico and Dysart came up with. Saying what they wrote is pretty average is being very kind. There's hardly any substance to the plot of an unpopular loner girl, who talks to her imaginary hero and friend (Avril Lavigne). Hana stumbles upon a website called Makes Wishes and it's not really explained what she does or why but a box arrives with a very poorly drawn multiple horned red demon inside who encourages her rebellious streak such as urinating in the street. Oh and if she snaps of each of its five horns she gets a wish for each. Avril warns her time and again to not use the demon but Hana wants a better life.

The pictures are pretty average as well. Most of the characters look the same, even one of the girls who was making fun of Hana looked exactly like her but taller. The Avril Lavigne imaginary friend looks nothing like Avril, although they do seem to be able to draw Avril as she looks more realistic in the posters on walls.

Plus we have the ultimate con, the graphic novel doesn't actually end. It just cuts out as if a whole story was written and ripped in two. So therefore if one of your five wishes was to know if two of Hana's four wishes made so far will also come true, as well as what her fifth is, you'll have to buy volume 2. Unethically this isn't mentioned anywhere on the cover. Buying this you'd assume it's a standalone read.

entertaining
By bookworm_girl
i thought this was a very nice little manga series. i give it 4 stars only because i really think volume 2 didn't give any real resolution. i also give it 4 stars because i felt that the main character has great relateability. wish there had been a third volume, but i highly reccomend. i think it's a lot better than the manga series they did based off Courtney Love.

Consent in International Arbitration (Oxford International Arbitration), by Andrea M. Steingruber

Arbitration is consensual by nature and the arbitrators' jurisdiction derives exclusively from the parties' agreement to use arbitration as a means to resolve their disputes. The concept of consent in arbitration - especially as cases become more complex - is taking on increasing importance, and issues with regard to the parties' consent to arbitrate are the topic of many articles and discussions.

Examining the notion, nature, and extent of consent in both commercial arbitration and investment arbitration, this book provides practitioners and academics with a thorough, case-related analysis of an issue which raises many questions.

While considering the differences between consent under State legislation and treaties, it addresses important theoretical questions to offer practical solutions. These include: how consent to arbitrate is given; which law shall govern the arbitration agreement or, more particularly, consent as an element of the substantive validity of it; and, conversely, according to which law will a possible lack of consent be judged; how consent should be interpreted; which relationship exists between consent as part of the substantive validity of an arbitration agreement and its formal validity (requirement to be "in writing"); which, if any, are the implied terms when consenting to arbitration; how consent to arbitrate influences procedural mechanisms like joinder and intervention of third parties or consolidation of arbitral proceedings, and which solutions adopted (or to be adopted) by treaties, national laws or arbitrational rules are, or would be, the most respectful of parties' consent in this respect.

The book includes original arguments and puts forward new suggestions with regard to the changeable consensual character of arbitration. It also provides a particular focus on problems that frequently arise in practice of international arbitration, for example issues related to complex multiparty arbitration and to jurisdictional questions in investment arbitration.

Harvey - gocomics.com/rants&raves * "Jane's inspirational impact upon the British Tommy was no exaggeration!" - Paul Gravett * "Jane is Britain's secret weapon!" - Sir Winston Churchill * "Jane is worth two armoured divisions to us. About the Author
Originally run in the Daily Mirror Newspaper from 1932 to 1959, Jane reached her peak of popularity during WWII when she became known as the 'Forces Girlfriend'. Sir Winston Churchill himself was said to be a fan and credited Jane for the British 36th Division's historic six mile advanced in 1944, following her legendary bath-time exit in a French Naafi Canteen. Created by Norman Pett.

A beloved British comics/pin-up icon returns
By Christopher Barat
What Milton Caniff's alluring Miss Lace was for war-weary, sex-starved American GIs during World War II, THE DAILY MIRROR's Jane was for hard-pressed British "Tommies" -- and both more and less besides. "More," because Jane was not created specifically to boost wartime morale, but had instead been appearing in THE MIRROR since 1932. "Less," because Jane, rather than being an alluring, iconic totem like Miss Lace, (1) actively got involved in the war effort as an intelligence officer and (2) took her endearing habit of frequently being accidentally disrobed to a higher plateau, often appearing fully or partially nude. Jane's raiment-relinquished doings were so racy for the time that even a "cleaned-up" version of the strip failed to catch on in the more prurient U.S. Titan Books, which has previously reprinted such British comic strips as DAN DARE and MODESTY BLAISE, has now given us an eyeful of what we've been missing by reprinting several continuities from Jane's memorable wartime career.

Jane started as a "flapper" character of sorts. Perpetually accompanied by a dachshund named Fritz (amateur Freudians, the time is now yours), she was a gag-a-day character until "Don" Freeman assumed the writing chores in 1938 and introduced continuity into the mix -- not to mention plenty of puns, wordplay, and high-toned literary allusions. Artist Norman Pett delineated the "misadventures" of the leggy blonde beauty -- many of which involved pratfalls that divested Jane of at least the top layer of her clothes -- in a style hovering somewhere in the vicinity of Caniff territory, though with somewhat cruder figure drawing (especially noticeable in backgrounds and angled facial profiles, where Pett had a tendency to give everyone, including Jane, overly large noses). World War II was the best thing ever to happen to the strip, giving Jane a less frivolous purpose in life and providing Pett with the perfect excuse to make the comic a literal "strip." Following the war, Pett left for other projects and the strip slowly foundered, finally expiring in the late 1950s. Several later attempts to revive JANE all tanked. However, Chrystabel Leighton-Porter, the primary model for Jane -- she also appeared in movies and stage shows -- remained popular with aging veterans until her death in 2000.

In this collection of strips from 1944-1945, Jane goes "undercover" (that seems to be an inappropriate word, somehow) as a member of NAAFI (a service organization that provided refreshments and such to British troops) and ENSA (the British version of the USO) and encounters appropriately nasty Nazi agents and guerrilla fighters. The depictions of Jane's foes aren't exactly subtle; the "lingerie salesman" who's actually a spy scoping out an RAF airfield is so transparently a bad guy that he should be wearing a SPY VS. SPY-style trenchcoat and dark glasses. Far more interesting are the interactions between Jane and her there-and-back-again beau, Lieutenant Georgie Porgie -- Freeman wasn't that great with character names, either -- and a shy NAAFI worker named Dinah, whom Jane convinces to shake loose of that metaphorical corset and ultimately snare a fiancee. As one might imagine, Jane picks up a few would-be suitors along the way, a French secret agent and a Russian officer among them, but stays loyal to Georgie (whom she would eventually marry at the end of the strip's run). What makes Jane interesting to me is the fact that she is often used as the butt of physical humor -- of the clothes-shedding variety and otherwise -- yet Pett and Freeman obviously respect her as a clever, courageous woman who may be somewhat naive but is aware of her naivete on some level. Jane could very easily have been turned into a buffoonish bimbo a la Little Annie Fanny, but her creators refused to let that happen. Probably Jane's closest American relative is Sally the Sleuth from SPICY DETECTIVE STORIES, but Jane is a far more interesting (and far better-drawn) character.

Titan includes a few tantalizing extras in the form of a vintage newspaper article from the Canadian armed forces newspaper THE MAPLE LEAF and some beautiful full-color reproductions from JANE'S JOURNAL, a postwar collection of pin-ups and poems. I am, however, disappointed that the modern perspective on the character was not given more attention. We get a one-page glorified blurb, "Introducing Jane," but that's about it. For the American release of the book, some explanatory footnotes on terms and acronyms used by the characters would also have been helpful. For all of Freeman's clever wordsmithing, though, the "madame" is the message here. If you like classic "good girl" art by the likes of Caniff, Bill Ward, and Dan DeCarlo, you'll certainly enjoy this collection.

Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design, by Charles Montgomery

A globe-trotting, eye-opening exploration of how cities can―and do―make us happier people

Charles Montgomery's Happy City is revolutionizing the way we think about urban life.
After decades of unchecked sprawl, more people than ever are moving back to the city. Dense urban living has been prescribed as a panacea for the environmental and resource crises of our time. But is it better or worse for our happiness? Are subways, sidewalks, and condo towers an improvement on the car dependence of the suburbs?
The award-winning journalist Charles Montgomery finds answers to such questions at the intersection between urban design and the emerging science of happiness, during an exhilarating journey through some of the world's most dynamic cities. He meets the visionary mayor who introduced a "sexy" bus to ease status anxiety in Bogotá; the architect who brought the lessons of medieval Tuscan hill towns to modern-day New York City; the activist who turned Paris's urban freeways into beaches; and an army of American suburbanites who have hacked the design of their own streets and neighborhoods.
Rich with new insights from psychology, neuroscience, and Montgomery's own urban experiments, Happy City reveals how cities can shape our thoughts as well as our behavior. The message is ultimately as surprising as it is hopeful: by retrofitting cities and our own lives for happiness, we can tackle the urgent challenges of our age. The happy city can save the world―and we can all help build it.

From Publishers Weekly
Can cities make us better people? Is the suburban American Dream really a nightmare? In this lively and accessible book, journalist Montgomery (The Shark God) marshals decades of interdisciplinary research into an effective argument against what he calls the dispersed city—the modern city/suburb designed around the automobile. The result is a succession of arguments meant to debunk individualism and show how citizens thrive on contact with others. In Montgomery's hands, urban design proves not only exciting, but integral to our future. He persuasively demonstrates that designing cities with social beings in mind can make them more pleasant places to live, and shows why suburbs are experiencing higher crime, as well as a significant happiness deficit. Furthermore, this passionate jeremiad argues that urban design often reinforces inequality, and Montgomery includes useful prescriptions for creating what he calls the fair city, as well as addressing issues like gentrification. For Montgomery, the city is a happiness project that exists in part to corral our conviviality and channel it productively. Though Montgomery's argument may seem strange at first, the book will likely make you a believer. 68 b&w illus. Agent: Rebecca Gradinger, Fletcher & Co. (Nov.)

From Booklist
What is considered the happiest city on earth? Improbably, it just might be Bogotá, Colombia, where drug lords ruled, bicycles now roll, and pedestrians stroll in a city with a mayor committed to transforming his town’s image and its people’s lives. What’s the secret to his success? Not surprisingly, restricting traffic plays a huge part in Bogotá’s livability, but banning cars isn’t the be-all and end-all to urban bliss. As Montgomery illustrates through vibrant discussions of the physics, physiology, and psychology of urban, suburban, and exurban dwellers, multiple factors must coalesce before a city, large or small, can achieve perfection. All of which may become terribly muddled as climate change and resource depletion stress urban centers to an untenable tipping point. Touting extensive research tempered by anecdotal examples, Montgomery enumerates the mistakes made not only by the people who plan and govern cities but also by the people who live in them, and he offers cautious reassurance that it’s not too late to turn things around for all cities. --Carol Haggas

Review

“Happy City is not only readable but stimulating. It raises issues most of us have avoided for too long. Do we live in neighborhoods that make us happy? That is not a silly question. Montgomery encourages us to ask it without embarrassment, and to think intelligently about the answer.” ―Alan Ehrenhalt, The New York Times Book Review

“Beautifully researched, Charles Montgomery's tale cleverly interweaves rigorous inquiry on urban history and the science of happiness with intimate and personal stories that humanize the vast task of understanding urban dynamics. An inspiring book that reminds us that the power to change our cities often lies in our own hands.” ―Maria Nicanor, Associate Curator of Architecture and Urbanism, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York

“Happy City is its own opiate: an eye-opening, pleasurable, utterly necessary tour through the best and worst neighborhoods of our urbanized world. Charles Montgomery shows us the way to a beautiful city.” ―Andrew Blum, author of Tubes

“Happy City will fundamentally change the way you see, experience, and feel the place you inhabit. It is a hopeful and optimistic vision of our urban future that uses science to argue what we always should have known: in building the good city, we won't just save our planet. We'll save ourselves.” ―Robert Hammond, cofounder of Friends of the High Line

“A brilliant, entertaining, and vital book. Charles Montgomery deftly leads us from our misplaced focus on money, cars, and stuff to consider what makes us truly happy. Then everything changes--the way we live, work, and play in humanity's major habitat, the city.” ―David Suzuki, host of CBC's The Nature of Things and cofounder of the David Suzuki Foundation

“Charles Montgomery's message is simple: If we're going to save the world, we must first be happier, and that means creating happier cities. Happy City isn't just a book about urban design written for urban professionals; it's for everyone who's ever wondered if their city could be a better place, and what they can do about it.” ―Jarrett Walker, author of Human Transit

“In a word, wow. I thought I had it all figured out, but this is something I was missing. In echoing all the great economic, health, and environmental mandates for walkable cities, I had mostly sidestepped the concept of happiness, thinking it too intangible to discuss in a compelling way. Thank goodness Charles Montgomery has had the guts and the skill to correct my error with this fascinating and entertaining book.” ―Jeff Speck, author of Walkable City

“Charles Montgomery writes with rare wit and erudition about the psychology of urban life. A wake-up call for citizens and planners alike, Happy City takes you by the scruff of the neck and shakes you into questioning everything around you. It not only shows us that we must make our cities better, but it tells us how we can.” ―Nicholas Humphrey, author of Soul Dust

“I thought I already lived in a happy city: New York. But Charles Montgomery reveals how much happier all of us--kids and adults--can be if we only reconsider what actually contributes to the good life. Suddenly I'm thinking of all the ways we can make millions of people happier. What a great book!” ―Lenore Skenazy, author of Free-Range Kids

The BEST reason for the New Urbanism
By Amazon Customer
As you might expect, the idea that people can be happy in a city doesn't come from the First World--at least today's. "The man who is tired of London is tired of life." --Samuel Johnson.

It comes from Enrique and Guillermo Penalosa from Bogota, Colombia. And the amazing thing is that Enrique Penalosa (past mayor of Bogota) is a career politician.

Find out what generally makes people happy in a city, then construct the city that way. What an idea. Again as you might expect, what makes people happy is generally NOT what said people think will make them happy. Think of the number of times that you thought a new thing--house, car, music player, large screen TV--would make you happy. And then things were pretty much the same within a couple of weeks of getting said thing.

What makes you happy is more likely to be a continuing series of experiences, and most likely experiences with other people. If the way your neighborhood is constructed and managed isolates you from people, you'll have fewer experiences and less happiness. But uncontrolled interaction might be just as bad as no interaction. Details matter.

This book is merely an introduction to the idea, but lots of us need the introduction, to learn another way of thinking about the subject. It's only about eleven bucks for your Kindle or Kindle app--buy it and read it.

A Brief Summary and Review
By A. D. Thibeault
*A full summary of this book is available here: An Executive Summary of Charles Montgomery's 'Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design'

The main argument: The modern city owes much of its current design to two major trends or `movements' that have emerged since the time of the industrial revolution. The first trend traces back to the industrial revolution itself, when the appearance of smoke-billowing factories (and egregiously dirty slums) necessitated new solutions to the problem of how to organize city life. The answer--still reflected in cities all over the world--was to compartmentalize functions, such that industrial areas, shopping areas, office areas, and living areas were separated off from one another into distinct blocks of the city.

The second trend in urban design took full hold in the post-war era, with the rise of the suburbs. In a sense, the suburbs represent a continuation and intensification of the compartmentalization movement, as the living areas of the upper classes were separated-off still further from the other areas of the city--out into sprawling districts miles away (as automobiles made it possible for certain city dwellers to escape to an idealized haven away from the hustle and bustle).

While the suburban movement has had the bulk of its impact on the landscape outside of the city proper, the city itself has not been spared of its influence. For indeed, the city was gutted of many of the inhabitants that formerly occupied it; and, what's more, it has been reshaped by the roads and freeways introduced to shuttle-in the suburbanites from their faraway destinations.

Now, it may well be the case that all this compartmentalization and suburbification was originally intended to benefit (most of) the city's inhabitants. Unfortunately, however, the longer we live with these trends in urban design, the more it is becoming clear that this way of organizing the city leaves much to be desired.

Let us begin with the suburbs, and work our way inwards. In the first place, those who have fled to the suburbs have found that there is a steep price to pay for escaping the hustle and bustle of the city, and that price begins with all the driving. And the hellish commute is only half of it: virtually nothing that the average suburbanite wants and needs, and no place they want to go, is accessible without a car trip. Obviously, all this driving is unpleasant in itself, but this is just the beginning. Second, and even more important, it leaves less time for other things--including family life. Also, the piling up of time spent behind the wheel is just plain unhealthy, as it leads to both obesity and--by extension--several other health problems. Additionally, having to drive everywhere is expensive, and is only getting more so as the price of oil continues to rise. Finally, because suburbanites spend so little time actually walking through their neighborhoods, they tend to have little casual contact with neighbors, which at least partly explains why they tend to be more detached from their communities.

With all the negative consequences of suburban life, it is no surprise that many of those who had formerly fled to the burbs are now fleeing back to the city. Actually, in many cases, suburbanites have had little choice, as the rising price of oil--together with the housing crash of 2008--has left them with no way to afford their suburban nightmare regardless (thus many of the suburbs have become as abandoned as the inner city once was).

Unfortunately, life back in the city has seldom been much better. For one thing, outdated compartmentalization in the city has interfered with accessibility in a manner that is similar to the way that sprawl has interfered with accessibility out in the suburbs. Second, since transportation networks in the city have been rearranged to suit cars, alternative forms of transportation have largely been compromised, thus leaving citizens with less real choice when it comes to getting around. Also, because it has been so expensive for cities to service the suburbs (they being so far away, and so spread out), there has been less money to fund public goods that serve the city, such as public transit, parks and sociability-inviting squares--thus the city has actually become a less livable place in the suburban era.

Thankfully, at least some cities around the world (from Bogota to Copenhagen to Vancouver etc.) have begun taking efforts to remedy these issues, and are beginning to embrace a vision of the city which (according to the research) is both better-functioning and leads to happier citizens. In broad outline, the happy city is composed of multi-use, multi-income communities; laced with parks and public squares of varying sizes; and tied together with transportation networks that reintroduce walking, cycling and public transport as real options. (This vision of the city is often referred to as the new urbanist movement.)

In his new book 'Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design' urbanist and writer Charles Montgomery takes us through the history of the modern city, and the latest efforts to reform over a century of ill-conceived design decisions.

Montgomery's book is a fantastically informative and fun read, and the author does well to introduce the ideas of the new urbanist movement, and the efforts that are currently underway to implement it around the world (as well as the forces that continue to oppose it). If the stories and research presented here do not render you a full convert to the new urbanist movement, it will at least make you rethink where (and how) you'd like to live. Bravo Charles Montgomery! A full summary of the book is available here: An Executive Summary of Charles Montgomery's 'Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design'

Enthusiastic author with some novel perspectives
By marisol
Montgomery's argument is founded on the principle that the only possible form of (correct and legitimate) happiness is to be found in the city, hence the necessity of making our cities happy places to live in. He first establishes his urban insularity by polarizing the country into good cities versus bad everything else, dismissing the idea that diverse places can bring diverse forms of fulfillment. He proceeds to obfuscate the very notion of what a suburb is (actually difficult to define as former suburbs are now integrated into cities, with all of their assets), choosing instead the worst American suburbs as representative of the lot.

Nevertheless, I recommend Happy Cities as a lively book filled with fresh and unexpected examples of what the best cities in the world can offer. The author captures what to me is the essential feature of the city, which is its graceful and dynamic ad hoc choreography. Montgomery gives a detailed and vivid description of public transportation systems that serve the whole gamut of city-dwellers. In Paris, you are never more than five minutes away from a transport option. You can step on a bus, stride along the sidewalk to find a near-by metro station, alight and rent a bicycle, turn it in and take a stroll through the park. Any such network does indeed create a joyful tie of solidarity between users.

The question remains: For whom this attractive situation? Who is left out and why? Is it a failure of planning and imagination, really? Whether you live in a city or not, I expect you might feel something is missing in Montgomery's idealized picture.

Star Wars: Jedi Academy, by Jeffrey Brown

New York Times bestselling author/illustrator Jeffrey Brown takes readers to a middle school in a galaxy far, far away....

This incredible, original story captures all of the humor, awkwardness, fun, and frustrations of middle school--all told through one boy's comics, journal entries, letters, doodles, and newspaper clippings. The setting? A galaxy far, far away...

Roan's one dream is to leave home and attend Pilot Academy like his older brother, father, and grandfather. But just as Roan is mysteriously denied entrance to Pilot School, he is invited to attend Jedi Academy--a school that he didn't apply to and only recruits children when they are just a few years old. That is, until now...

This inventive novel follows Roan's first year at Jedi Academy where, under the tutelage of Master Yoda, he learns that he possesses more strength and potential than he could have ever dreamed. Oh, and he learns other important things too--like how to make a baking soda volcano, fence with a lightsaber, slow dance with a girl, and lift boulders with the Force.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–8—Roan Novachez has been personally invited by Yoda to attend Jedi Academy, but he's afraid that he'll flunk out and have to attend the Agriculture Academy on Tatooine next year. This Diary of a Wimpy Kid-like graphic novel follows Roan's adventures from the summer after elementary school through his first year at the academy as he makes friends (and enemies) and struggles to learn how to use the Force. Interspersed throughout the panels depicting events referred to in the diary are other items of interest, such as the boy's schedule and report card. The book's style matched with the popular subject will guarantee circulation in any collection. With the exception of Yoda, Brown has created an entirely new cast of characters set in the Star Wars universe around the events of The Phantom Menace. While it might be disappointing for those familiar with this world to see scant representation of beloved characters, it makes the book an easy starting point for new fans. There are plenty of references to other elements (the T-16 Skyhopper and Jedi training remotes, for example) for diehards to get excited about. Brown combines Star Wars excitement with real-life kid problems to make a fresh, inspiring, and humorous take on the franchise.—J. M. Poole, Webster Public Library, NY

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, Roan Novachez thought he was destined to attend Pilot Academy Middle School, just as his older brother and father did. His dreams are crushed when he is rejected by Pilot Academy and accepted into a sketchy new school called Coruscant Jedi Academy. Roan has no idea what to expect at the academy and feels pressured after learning he is the oldest student ever to enroll there. Confused and struggling to keep up, Roan tries to fly under the radar and passes the time drawing comics of his daily life at his strange boarding school. This fantastic chapter book by Brown will satisfy those who loved his previous Star Wars works, Darth Vader and Son (2012) and Vader’s Little Princess (2013). With its mix of comics and text, it will also appeal to fans of Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants hybrid books. On a deeper level, this book tackles serious issues like failure, bullying, friendship, determination, and starting a new school in a fun and funny way. Perhaps best of all, it encourages readers to practice creativity and to start their own journals. Grades 3-7. --Candice Mack

An Attractive Middle School Variation on Star Wars
By Pop Bop
Think of this as a sort of graphic-chapter-book, and I mean that in a very good way.

Mr. Brown has taken practically every important aspect of the Star Wars canon, written it in a style that would be interesting for and accessible to an early reader, illustrated it with very clever and apt illustrations, and wrapped it all up as a "school days" adventure that features a realistic and engaging hero.

Roan is crushed when he is denied admission to Star Pilot Academy, and then confused and intimidated when he later receives an invitation to attend the more prestigious but less well known Jedi Academy. The other students at the Academy were tapped when they were much younger, so Roan has to adjust as the new kid and the latecomer. The story embraces all of the conventions of middle school fiction - Roan makes friends and enemies, encounters bullies, has some scary teachers and some teachers he really likes, deals with homesickness and adjusting to school. There is some budding romance. There are some intrigues, and lots of school based events, (a dance, a light saber tournament, a science fair, field trips, an election).

The genius here is that everything is based on Star Wars. Yoda is basically the headmaster of the Academy. The teachers are characters from the various movies. Field trips are to the sites of Star Wars episodes. Students all come from worlds whose names you recognize. Our hero, Roan, is from Tatooine and is basically a stand-in for a Luke Skywalker type character. There are lots of inside jokes and references, so that you have both an engaging story that is open to a Star Wars newbie and an immersive and sly Star Wars compendium for really rabid fans.

The book is written at a chapter book or slightly higher level, but because it is a graphic novel with collages, inserts, extra illustrations, letters home, vacation photos and the like it feels a little bit like a comic book. I could see this as being a really effective book for the purpose of moving a young reader from chapter books to more demanding fare.

For what it's worth, the Jedi training includes a lot of emphasis on concentration, calm, courage, honesty, loyalty and similar virtues. While there is no particular political or moral point being made by the book, (most of this comes from Yoda, and some of it seems tongue in cheek), and none of this is very heavy handed, it gives the book a little bit of old fashioned positive instruction that I found encouraging. The students are all decent and realistic, and Roan's awkwardness as the new kid is especially well sketched, so despite the Star Wars theme everything that happens could be relatable to a regular Earthbound kid reader.

So, if your young reader is a Star Wars fan, or just looking for an early reader that's a bit out of the ordinary, this could be a very nice choice.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

My dyslexic son read this without prompting
By itchick00
I actually bought this at Barnes and Noble. I went to buy a last minute birthday gift and while there saw the display. My 10 year old son is a Star Wars fanatic. He is severely dyslexic and dysgraphic with several other learning disabilities. He reads 2 grades below level and spells at a first grade level. The only other books he reads are pop culture graphic novels like Adventure Time and Domo. I picked up the book, opened it, saw the format and was immediately hopeful. I took it over to show it to him and he said he wanted it. Glimmer of hope sprung, I couldn't purchase it fast enough.
He started reading it in the car on the way home. He read it in the car on the way to the sleepover birthday party. He read it the next day and the next day. It took him a few days, and occasionally he had to ask me about some of the words. Most words he can decipher due to context of the surrounding text, he is above average intelligence. Some of the words he still had problems with though.
I am praying for additional books in this series. To walk into a room and see him reading a book was amazing. I will buy them all! The Origami Yoda series is similar but a bit too much linear text for him, he has a hard time following it.

My son loved this book.
By Ian Tucker
I purchased this book for my 8 year old son. He couldn't put it down and finished it in about half a day. The book was well worth the money. My son loves to read and I will do whatever it takes to encourage his passion.
