Jenni Romaniuk, Associate Director (International), Ehrenberg-Bass Institute for Marketing Science

Jenni Romaniuk is Research Professor and Associate Director (International) of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, at the University of South Australia. Jenni's research covers Brand equity, Mental Availability, Brand Health Metrics, Advertising effectiveness, Distinctive assets, Word of mouth and the role of Loyalty and Growth. She is the developer of the Distinctive Asset Grid, which is used by companies around the world to assess the strength and strategic potential of their brand's distinctive assets. She is also a pioneer in Mental Availability measurement and metrics. Jenni is Executive Editor (International) of the Journal of Advertising Research, and is on the Editorial review board for four other journals. She has published in journals such as the Journal of Business Research, Journal of Marketing Management, Marketing Theory and European Journal of Marketing.

Dr Byron Sharp is Professor of Marketing Science, and the Director of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, at the University of South Australia. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute's research is used and financially supported by many of the world's leading corporations, including Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, First National Bank, General Motors, Procter & Gamble, Turner Broadcasting, CBS, ESPN, and Unilever. Byron's book 'How Brands Grow' was voted marketing book of the year by AdAge readers in 2013. He has also published over 100 academic papers and is on the editorial board of five journals. His university textbook 'Marketing: theory, evidence, practice' (Oxford University Press) was released in 2013.

Reading this book feels like winning the lottery

The marketing world is so full of anecdotes, it's like if a doctor prescribed your a medication without any scientific backing or research, relying only on his instincts and hunch (which scientists have proven over and over to be unreliable for a big number of situations). 99.9% of marketing books are like these. Not only the advice they provide is not helpful, but also HURTS the product/brand you'll promote (as mentioned in this book in the part of user personas).

I stumbled upon Byron Sharp's work quite accidentally by reading a book called "Applying Scientific Reasoning to the Field of Marketing" where Dr. Sharp was the only marketing professor this author mentioned. I started doing some research and discovered his original "How Brands Grow" book. The principles totally changed the way I look upon marketing, it felt like I suddenly took the "red pill" and many things became crystal clear on why some products I thought were nothing special in quality were popular and with big market share and why some extraordinary products were so-and-so in popularity (tip: advertising and the fact people don't think much about products).

This second book focuses more on the HOW to part which is what we've been all waiting for. In Chapter 1, the authors give a brief summary of the fundamental principles of the book. It's like "How brands grow brief summary + what we know since then". Then in subsequent characters, they go on debunking popular myths which could save marketers thousands of wasted hours in applying principles that yield no effect. After this, they provide more specific how-to advice on principles that DO work and how to implement them conceptually. For more detailed instructions, there are footnotes with the appropriate studies.

Sometimes reading this book (and the first "How Brands Grow") feels like winning the lottery. I still don't understand why this book isn't required reading for every marketing course out there. It makes me wonder how evidence-focused marketing professors really are (this is the only book out of 100s I've seen that backs up 100% of what it says with evidence.) Maybe it's the fact that there are huge market research companies and consultancy agencies (where these professors are on the board) that charge hefty fees for doing "segmentation" (a principle debunked by this book), "targeted reach" (also a non-effective tactic which is elaborated in this book) and "differentiation" (which also doesn't work). This incentive is multiplied because those firms can charge even more fees by claiming their work produces a better segmented audience, a more laser-targeted reach and even bigger differentiation. If they go and actually accept the evidence here, they'll have to say...sorry guys everything we did for you was proven ineffective. We'll have to totally revise what we're doing or shut our doors.

Consider yourself VERY lucky if you came upon this book, because the odds were against you (it isn't advertised in mainstream media as much as pop-marketing gurus, so you were either very lucky to somehow stumble upon it or crazy persistent like me to throw every marketing book out there that doesn't provide any evidence behind its claims and keep searching for that one which does).

Best Marketing book you will ever buy.

I was very skeptical about the recommendation I got on the first book. I thought after 30 year of marketing with companies like P & G, Kraft, T-Mobile and Mars I knew enough about marketing. I was wrong. I found it to be the best clear headed marketing book I have have read in years. THere is so much baloney that passes for marketing today. This book and the first book by Sharp approach marketing from a much more realistic basis. The book explains how many platitudes about marketing are just not true. If you are serious about your craft, I suggest you read these two books.

How Brands Grow part 2 is a must read for all those interested in understanding what makes the difference between big, successful brands and small brands.
This new book brings all the insights of 'How Brands Grow - what marketers don't know' to the next level, providing practical examples on how to measure mental availability, distinctive assets and physical availability. Additionally it also provides plenty of data points on emerging markets - very useful and relevant to demonstrate that the laws of growth hold true also in less developed, often fast growing markets.
I found 'how brands grow - part 2' as inspiring as the former and possibly even better in providing guidance about implementing the laws of growth in real business life.

The Nobel prize-winning Italian dramatist Fo and his frequent collaborator, Franca Rame, have been eliciting laughter and thought for almost half a century both as writers and as actors. They are modern commedia dell'arte entertainers with a social, political, and historical conscience. Jenkins's joint study is a much-needed critical review of their work. As Fo's official American translator, Jenkins has worked closely with the texts and the artists for several years. In this book, he communicates his deep commitment to and appreciation of their work, covering their biographies, artistic development, and philosophy and surveying many major works. With its extensive text samples, performance photographs, and reproductions of Fo's paintings, this book is both comprehensive and thoughtful. An anthology of plays, We Won't Pay! is the first volume in the collected works by this translator. The four plays collected here date from 1959 to 1986. In addition to the title play, the book includes "About Face," "Elizabeth: Almost by Chance a Woman," and "Archangels Don't Play Pinball." As translations, they are funny and agile and will be more accessible to Americans than earlier Fo translations, which were geared toward British audiences. Of course, since Fo is such an improviser, his actual performances may differ widely from one occasion to another and from what is presented here. Many were surprised when Fo, a mere writer and clownish performer of rather buffoonish comedies, won the Nobel Prize in 1997. He was just an entertainer! Many who have seen his anarchistic farces descry serious intent just below their mad comic surfaces. We Won't Pay! We Won't Pay! is a Feydeau-like farce triggered by a food riot. About Face is a variation on a plot device--identical strangers switch identities--hoary when Plautus used it and a vicious satire on Italy's class structure: the president of Fiat, stricken with amnesia and taken for an assembly-line worker, suffers the daily humiliations of the working class. The madness in Fo in itself carries a political message; many plays revel in the life-giving anarchism that results when the stultifying status quo breaks down. Fo's debt to Marxism is nearly as great as Brecht's, but what makes Fo delightful to read is his debt to those other Marxists--Groucho, Chico, and Harpo. A most deserved Nobel Prize

Dario Fo is a great artist and a great man. With his wife Franca he has written some of the best pages of Italian culture. I had the fortune of watching them act (live and on TV) in most of their plays. With the barest stage they can convey the richest combination of form and substance. They represent the core of the profound culture and sensitivity of the Italian working class, which so important has been in the social development of that country, and still is little known abroad (shaded by the stereotypical and outdated images of mandolins, meatballs, and mafiamen). I deeply encourage anyone to read as much as possible of what Dario has written.
I found on this website a review claiming that "Fo supports the WTC attackers". The author of that review should have gone a little deeper in reading the facts, just to discover that the intended message of the reported statement was quite opposite to the alleged one. The original text that includes the statement can be found at ...(in Italian). I believe the misunderstanding is far from casual. Nowadays the Italian Prime Minister controls almost every information medium. He has restored most of the political and cultural conditions that Italy was forced to "enjoy" between 1922 and 1943. It has become very hard for dissenting voices to reach a wide audience without having their messages distorted on the way. The "Corriere della Sera" excerpt from Dario and Franca's email on the 9/11 tragedy is just one more example of how easy it is to manipulate the truth by simply reporting minimal parts of it.

Theatre in Action

For decades Dario Fo and his wife, Franca Rame, have created some of the most interesting political theatre of the 20th century. Fo's work deals with social injustice, political freedom and economic policies. He often expresses pro-communist views. Common themes in Fo's work include critiques of fascism and terrorism. Much of his work is targeted at the working class
Fo is known for his use of the Italian tradition of commedia dell'arte. This tradition allows Fo to exploit taboo subjects in highly comic situations. Like the commedia dell'arte tradition, Fo's humor is bawdy and over the top. It is tremendously absurd and equally as witty.
Dario Fo won the Nobel Prize for Literature.
We Can't Pay! We Won't Pay!, Accidental Death of an Anarchist and Ordinary Couple are my favorite works by Dario Fo.

A.L. Bell, in his ingnorance has overlooked the fact the Fo's statement is quite true, and if further researched his review would have also stated the fact that Mr. Fo had been one of Italy's greatest political satirists and has provided Europe with great satirical works in the latter part of the last century and continues to do so.

An absolutely gripping page turner!

Shatters expectations for this series. This is just brilliant. I could not put it down and stayed up much later then I should have to finish it. One of the most human and realistic stories to come from the Black Library in a while. Gives you an insight into the working of the Imperium from the perspective of real people and not just Space Marines(don't worry, there is amazing action with them as well) and the political intrigue gets more and more interesting, every scene on Terra more compelling.
Rob Sander's has truly created a masterclass story of Orks and Man battling to the bitter end. The descriptions of the swarming Orks are actually scary at times, instead of the idiot humour they usually exhibit. Highly recommended, and a stronger addition to the series than its predecessor.

Top of the Food Chain

Continuing the tale of the orks' revenge on humanity, Sanders does a good job of holding up what Abnett laid down.

The first novel, I Am Slaughter, ended by showing a bit of the scope and unending tide of orks being launched at the Imperium. Here we get a far better look as entire worlds aren't just killed, they're destroyed as thoroughly as if the Death Star (of Star Wars fame) had blown them up. The orks themselves are seemingly endless in number, reminding one of how some films show a zombie apocalypse, with relentless waves of the living dead. Here, though, the enemy is very much alive.

In specific, we see a massive battle between a brother-Chapter of Imperial Fists (the Fists Exemplar) as they struggle to hold out against wave after wave of orks on their crashed space fortress. A lot of detail is put into the clash, and if you ever thought an apothecary was more talk than fight, then Brother-Medicae Mendel Reoch will prove you wrong (and teach you to love the chainsword more than the bolter). Sanders also writes the inversion, in which we see a progressively-worsening battle between ordinary humans trying to stop their water-world of Undine from being utterly overrun with orks. Things go from terrible to horrific for them, with entire cities sunk below the waves and when the ranking commander starts on a contingency plan, the reader can only accept that their situation is incapable of getting any worse; they really are royally screwed.

We do of course cover the corrupt politics of the Imperial Palace, and how Grand Master of the Assassins Drakan Vangorich attempts to manipulate matters so that instead of prettying their reputations, the High Lords actually work to stop the ork attacks. Things threaten to get ugly for him, though, as last book indicated, because the Inquisition is trying to handle things themselves, and give him dire warning (being immune to threats, he duly returns them).

Perhaps the biggest moment (for me, at least) was the work done by the Mechanicus. In the aftermath of Ardamantua, they are trying to gather data so they can understand ork gravitational and teleportational technologies, and in the process they make some shocking discoveries. I don't want to give anything away, but I will admit that I was almost too excited to put the book down, and I really needed sleep at that point.

Overall, Rob Sanders really does cement himself once again as a solid writer for Black Library, be it for Space Marines or ordinary mortals (for the latter, his "Redemption Corps" in the Honour Imperialis anthology is definitely worth checking out). He writes hard action and desperate survival against impossible odds, and here he shines, showing the massive threat posed by the ferocious orks.

Super Orks still attacking – Episode 2

Predator, Prey, is the second novel in the Beast Arises series following “I am Slaughter” from Dan Abnett. The story is the continuation of the first volume which you would do well to read before this one. It is set in the 32nd Millenium, hundreds of years after the end of the Horus Heresy. The Empire has become complacent, bureaucratic and decadent. It is coming under massive attack by what seems to be a new breed of Orks with bases made of whole moons that move across space and attack almost simultaneously multiple planets and laying them to total waste before moving on to the next target. While the threat grows and various very different planets fall and die, the High Lords of Terra keep on with their politicking and power plays and totally underestimate the threat, except or some who decide to take things in their own and very ruthless hands.

As also mentioned by another reviewer, the story has no single focus. Instead, the reader is treated with a collection of chapters tracking events that are happening simultaneously on the various planets under attack and on Terra. The various invasions include a couple of forge worlds being assaulted, a water world undergoing invasion, a desert world defended by an Imperial Fists successor Chapter in their damaged and beleaguered space fortress, a Black Templar Crusading force lead by their Marshall and abandoned by their accompanying Imperial Navy escort and a Mechanicum force which is more interested in studying the enemy and the sources of its strength than in helping anyone, including their own forge worlds under attack.

The author does convey rather well the sense of grim despair of the individual worlds which get overwhelmed one after another by floods of Orks raining down on them through devastating planetary assaults. It also conveys rather superbly the contrast between these unfolding catastrophes and the atmosphere of intrigue, corruption, power fights and rivalries taking place at the same time on Terra.

The characterisation is also interesting. One of the most intriguing is the somewhat idealistic Grand Master of the Assassins Drakan Vangorich and his far-reaching networks, because he seems to be the only power – along with the Space Marines - that is really devoted to the Empire and not driven by self-interest. Also interesting, if perhaps less original, are the oppositions within the ranks of the Mechanicum researchers between those who believe in the fight for Mankind and the Empire, and those who believe in promoting the sole interests of the Mechanicum. A good story worth a solid four stars and hoping the following ones will be just as good, and perhaps also a bit longer than this shortish 250 pages.

The emerging computer system can be built by following the chapters, although this is only one option, since the projects are self-contained and can be done or skipped in any order. All the computer science knowledge necessary for completing the projects is embedded in the book, the only pre-requisite being a programming experience.The book's web site provides all tools and materials necessary to build all the hardware and software systems described in the text, including two hundred test programs for the twelve projects. Fantastic book--Ideal for self-study

I highly recommend this book if you are interested in learning about computer science. The book is organized around the idea of building a computer from the fundamental logic gates up--starting with the hardware (combinational logic gates, arithmetic logic units, sequential logic gates, the CPU and memory) and then through the software hierarchy (starting with the machine language, and working up through the assembler, a virtual machine, a compiler for a high-level language, and an operating system). As a "by-product," one learns, by very relevant examples, many fundamental concepts of computer science.

You can just read the book, but the best idea is to follow the authors' advice and do the projects where you implement every necessary piece of the computer system yourself. The projects are all very well organized. All the software necessary to emulate any part of the computer is available for free download from the authors' web-site. It all works beautifully. If you want to skip any of the projects, you can, because the software is organized in such a way that it will use built-in modules instead of the ones you built if necessary.

The authors seem to have extensively tested the whole approach through the courses they have taught using this material. I also noticed that Harvard's Computer Science 101 course is being taught based on this book. I have been using the book for self-study with absolutely no problems--in fact I have never had such a great experience with a self-study course. All you need is a Windows or Linux (edit: Mac OS X works fine too) computer and access to the internet, and you can give yourself a wonderful education in computer science.

In terms of prerequisites, you only really need to have some experience with programming (e.g. with C, or ideally with Java or Python). I think that the book should work well for students or hobbyists who don't have any more experience than that, but it is also great for much more experienced students, as a kind of integrative summary of the field. I also think the book is perfect for graduate students or researchers from other fields who want to learn how digital hardware and software systems are actually engineered.

Finally, I just want to compliment the authors on the extraordinary care that they have taken with the whole project. The computer design that you build up is wonderfully elegant--at every stage the design is just as simple as it can be while being sufficient. Every piece of emulation software works as advertised. Even the extra powerpoint or .pdf tutorials are nicely done. This is really quality work, and using it is just a real pleasure. Finally, the source code for all the software provided by the authors is available, so if you wanted to extend the provided emulators, you could do that.

In summary, I give this book my unqualified highest recommendation.

Without any alternative

I have used this book in my computer organization class (Istanbul Bilgi University, Computer Science dept.) and I must admit that it brought a very fresh perspective to second year computer science students. For the first time they were able to see the process of designing a computer from the ground up.

The book is very suitable for self-study or classroom use: it has an excellent website, all the required HDL simulator, assembler, CPU and VM emulator and compiler are freely available and easy to run on any platform (they are all coded in Java).

Of course there are simplifications such as the lack of interrupts and multhithreading but this book prepares the students very well for 3rd and 4th year courses. Every chapter has very well and clearly defined goals and projects that are %100 self-contained. That means even if you skip a chapter you can work out the next project without any loss in implementation.

If you or your students want to have a grasp what it means to build a computer starting from logic gates, hardware definition languages, up to the ALU, RAM, CPU, assembler, virtual machine and compilation of an object oriented high level language, then this book is the best choice. It is one of the most hands-on book I've ever seen in this subject matter and at that intermediate level.

If only I could give more than 5 stars

I have nothing but the most positive things to say about The Elements of Computing Systems. If you ever wanted to know how a computer worked -- I mean REALLY know -- read Charles Petzold's book CODE. If you also wanted to BUILD a computer, read The Elements of Computing Systems. This book takes you from a single basic logic gate to a working computer, then proceeds to design software and even a simple operating system that runs on it. (Caveat: there are 2 things you do not create yourself: the system clock and the base module for flip-flops. There's a good reason why for each. Again, to understand these parts better, I highly recommend Petzold's CODE.) All chapters are independent and can be done in any order, but the order they have it in is best. I think the authors intend for TECS to be a textbook for a class but I'm reading it on my own and it's perfect for self study. Before you read, make sure you consult the book's website's errata because there are a few typos.

I also have nothing but the highest praises for the accompanying software. The authors make freely available a small open source software suite to help develop the computer you're making. Full tutorials are online. The test suites are fully scriptable. The scripts for actually testing your work are included and there's also an appendix in the book explaining the scripting language used. The software is all written in Java and will run on Windows, Linux, or Mac.

Everything is kept as simple as possible without sacrificing any understanding. A perfect learning tool.

An Excellent Resource for Hotel Owners, Managers and Hospitality Students

Revenue Management in hotels has evolved from the airlines yield management systems introduced in the 1980s as a means of more effectively linking pricing to specific supply and demand using automation.

Understanding the key concepts in revenue management's and applying its most useful strategies and tactics have become critical for most hospitality operations, regardless of hotel size, brand or location.

Dr. Gabor Forgacs has worked in the industry on two continents over a 20 year period. He has been on the faculty of the Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Ryerson University in Toronto since 1997. Dr. Forgacs has used this combination of experience and research in a new resource that delves into revenue maximization strategies and their operational application.

The book is an easy read of only 100 pages, but it is full of useful information.

The 5 chapters are:
1. What is revenue management?
2. Measurement - internal and external measures
3. Tactical revenue management including forecasting demand and availability
4. Strategies in marketing, pricing, packaging and distribution channel
5. Revenue management's role and place, including automation and systems

Great Academy Coaching Drills + Philosophy of Training

Excellent book, great passing drills and small sided games.

I have found it extremely usefuland I absolutely love the technical training drills which there are so many of. However, the best thing is probably the coaching philosophy offered at the very beginning. It outlines exactly how you should approach each training session and what the key aspects are that you need to remember.

It is the best youth soccer book i have ever read because you have top academy coaches from Real Madrid, Athletico Madrid and Bilboa outlining their training philosophy and all the practices are fun, competitive, and hugely beneficial for the players.

Not bad book but not great!

Way to expensive for the quality of book. It does let you into the Spanish way of teaching football and it shows the drills. Another negative is that many of the drills are not explained properly. The reason why I gave it 3 stars is that it is the only book of its kind on the market.
