Paul H. Smith, a retired Army intelligence officer and Operation Desert Storm veteran, spent seven years in the Department of Defense's remote-viewing program, serving as operational remote viewer, theory instructor and trainer, security officer, and unit historian. Smith has a B.A. in Middle Eastern studies from Brigham Young University, and an M.S. in Strategic Intelligence (Middle East emphasis) from the Defense Intelligence College, and is a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin. He is president of Remote Viewing Instructional Services, Inc., and vice president of the nonprofit International Remote Viewing Association.

Best of Bolivia, by a mile.

Here's the thing about Bolivia. It's a country of vast, unspoiled contrasts. There are places so remote that you may think you've arrived on another planet, yet those places find their way into this book. Want to get lost in the wilderness, just like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? No problem. Want to stroll the streets of beautiful colonial towns full of baroque architecture? Got that too. Want to go trekking through the most rugged mountains, densest tropical forest, or hippest urban jungle? It's all here. From top quality resorts to hole-in-the-wall hostels, you can be pampered or persecuted. It's up to you. No matter what you choose to do, you'll share all this loveliness with only about 11 million other people, and a good travel guide.

A country as diverse as Bolivia deserves a guide as good as this one. Truly excellent, comprehensive travel guides are hard to find, but this is one of them. There are 400 pages here dedicated to this landlocked wonder. The detail itself is awesome, from the depth of the cultural and historical content to the comprehensiveness of the numerous listings. The maps are simple and accurate, and there's enough good color photography and other content to pique your interest. The material I like to call "coaching" material - suggested itineraries, must-see lists, and "if you like" recommendations - are not just filler content, but display a real working knowledge of the country.

I've used other guides to plan trips to Bolivia, namely, the Footprint guide, and it is also a good book, but it just can't compare to the richness of this volume. The Lonely Planet guide illustrates a real commitment to Bolivia as a prime destination rather than a pass-through.

This book retains a lot of the original spirit of Lonely Planet as a guide for trekkers and outdoorsman, as it features many places in Bolivia that have inspired every human that has set foot on it, from Inca to Spanish to mestizo. Cultural, historical and natural contexts are fantastic, and practical information is easily accessible and honestly useful.

The bottom line is that this is the best guide for Bolivia, by a wide margin, for all sorts of travelers. If you find yourself here, by all means, buy this book.

About the Author
Shozo Sato is a master of traditional Zen arts. His areas of expertise include ikebana (flower arranging), chanoyu (tea ceremony), and Japanese theater, as well as sumi-e. He conducts workshops on ikebana and sumi-e throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe and is the author of numerous books including Ikebana and The Art of Sumi-e. He was the founding director of Japan House at the University of Illinois, where he is Professor Emeritus. Sato resides in Fort Bragg, CA.

Excellent Book

This is the first new Sumi-e book to come out in a while. While it incorporates some material from his earlier books, there is a lot that is new. There are beautiful color photographs of the tools used, and many of step-by-step techniques that I haven't seen in other books. There is a chapter on the relationship between calligraphy and painting, which I have never seen either, in any of the large stack of Sumi-e books I've already acquired, and which is very helpful for those who are at the level to start adding calligraphy to their paintings, as well as for calligraphers who would like to add sumi-e to their skills. (The tools are the same, but the techniques are very different). Painting techniques are thoroughly explored, not just from a technical viewpoint, but also from philosophical and artistical perspectives. There are many beautiful works that the artist has done himself, for inspiration and to illustrate the concepts that are learned in the book. I'm glad this book is in hardback, because it's one I will admire and refer to often. I highly recommend this book, even if you are not an artist and just want to enjoy the paintings.

The definitive Sumi-e book

If you are looking for the modern definitive book on Sumi-e look no further. Comprehensive, beautifully illustrated with Prof. Sato's own work, this is first and foremost a technical manual on the art of ink painting as it's practiced in Japan and China. Demonstrations are numerous and complete in both traditional Sumi-e as well as Suibaku-ga and is profusely illustrated with examples of each. The book includes a DVD in which the author demonstrates in real time various brush strokes and ink application techniques that would be much harder to grasp without the visual element. Additionally included is a concise but very informative equipment survey that, like the rest of the book, is well illustrated with full color photographs; AND the DVD is worth the price on it's own.

This book does a decent job detailing the economic ventures ...

This book does a decent job detailing the economic ventures of the Mormon pioneers, mostly in Utah. While the book occasionally uses obvious pro-Mormon language, still it serves as an accurate and objective accounting of Mormon economic activity--compiling several details that may be challenging to find elsewhere.

After reading this book its hard to not puzzle over the irony that a group of people who today are so fiscally conservative and proud of their American capitalism were once the most socialist leaning culture of any significant size in the United States.

The Greatest Book on Mormon History

I love this book more than I can possibly express in a review such as this. The unique approach taken by the author--economic motivations and considerations as the point from which to view Mormon history in Deseret--works better than any other approach I've encountered. This book opened my eyes to the awful famines and unjust government persecution endured by my ancestors as they sought to built a godly homeland in the desert. I recommend this book without reservation to anyone who really wants to learn about the toil and triumphs of those who tholed in Deseret.

However, Great Basin Kingdom gave me a clearer understanding of how intensely the early Saints worked to realize Zion. They put us to shame! We TALK about building Zion, they DID it! The colonization effort with its egalitarian methods of dividing up property in new settlements struck me how united they were - we are so conditioned today by Babylon's economic values, I doubt we are humble enough to do what they did. (We should repent).

This book opened my eyes (even wider) to the reality that Zion is not just a spiritual endeavor, it is economic as well. The author also verified my suspicion that the polygamy raids were a smoke screen for the Church's enemies to destroy the economic powerhouse we were building.

Very interesting Astro-Trading book

In his 2nd book Mr. Ratti explains how to read the sky and gives a specific example of how to setup a software with which you are able to identify turning-points on your intraday price-charts. This idea is not completely new (See: Why Markets Turn;Azzet Group), but Mr. Ratti gives you background-information with explanations not found anywhere else.
In Chapter 5 of his little book he moves to another intraday-planetary-trading-possibility i have not seen yet. Whith this knowledge you can devide your tading-day in parts which then are bound to one planet. I have to figure out if this really helps intraday-trading but it's a complete new idea so far.
With his new 'little' Book Mr. Ratti has written again a very interesting book for the Astro-Trader with information not found anywhere else. Like his first book, it's also a 'must have' for every Astro-Trader.

Good astro trading book!

This is a good read for the beginning or advanced astro trader. The daytrade technique taught is little known and valid. The author even tells you how to get free software so you can use the technique to trade with.

If you are an advanced astro trader or a student of Gann, Beyer, Jensen, Ferrera etc.,and you belong to any of the various yahoo astro-finance groups you will be familiar with the "wheels within wheels" concept. This is right out of the book of Ezekiel. The authors explanation of the astrology/astronomy in Ezekiel is sound and may be the only public print explanation ever offered.

Most astro & trading material is priced way too high! This author's material is the exception as he seems to offer good product at prices that are more than fair compared to others in the industry.

An empty in content book

The book is a booklet of 90 pages with a lot of pictures and price charts to fill the pages. I expected to get some value from this overpriced book but it is totally a rip-off and an insult to the reader. The author states that rising, culmination and setting of the planets is correlated with price moves, picks some price charts which fit the hypothesis and voila! The trading secret! Only he misses to state that there are on average 20-30 such instances in the trading hours! Which one is going to work is out of question for the author. I feel naive I bought this book.

Written for parents, teachers, family doctors, mental health professionals, school guidance counselors, social workers, juvenile justice workers, clergy, and others concerned about children and young adults, Choices and Consequences describes a practical, proven, step-by-step intervention system that anyone can use to stop a teen's harmful involvement with alcohol and other drugs and start him or her on the road to a richer, fuller, healthier life.

About the Author
Dick Schaefer has worked with disturbed youth for the past thirty years, starting out as a counselor at Home on the Range for Boys in 1961. His work in the field of addiction began in 1966 as chaplain at the Heartview Foundation for Alcoholics in Mandan, North Dakota. Since that time, he has held positions as program director for youth at the South East Mental Health Center in Fargo, North Dakota, and director for the youth unit of the alcoholism and drug division at the North Dakota State Hospital. As the director of the Touch Love Center in Fargo since 1981, Mr. Schaefer directs a staff of outreach workers who develop programs for alcohol and other drug users and children living with alcoholics. He works with both schools and agencies within a sixty-mile radius of Fargo in setting up community network systems to confront youth who are using alcohol and other drugs. Dick Schaefer has served on numerous state committees and boards in North Dakota. Notable among them are the Governor's Juvenile Justice Committee, the Conference on Social Welfare, the Crossroads Crisis Center in Jamestown, the Hot Line Crisis Center in Fargo, and the YMCA Youth Committee. He served on the Committee for the Training and Certification of Addiction Counselors for the State of North Dakota and has worked on the Chemical Abuse Subcommittee of the Governor's Commission on Children and Adolescents At Risk. In addition, Mr. Schaefer is a part-time instructor at North Dakota State University and Moorhead State University. He has also taught at the Medical School at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in philosophy from St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota; a Bachelor of Divinity in theology, and a Master of Arts in education from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Dick Schaefer is a licensed teacher and addiction counselor, and he holds a Level II National certification from NAADAC. He is a speaker and consultant for the Johnson Institute and is the author of the book, Choices & Consequences: What To Do When a Teenager Uses Alcohol/Drugs, and was a script consultant on a video by the same name produced by the Johnson Institute. In addition, Mr. Schaefer has consulted on two other videos produced by the Johnson Institute, one on relapse, Another Chance to Change (1991), and one on violence prevention and intervention in schools, Respect and Protect (1995).

Know a drug using teen? Read this book--You can help!

Of all the books I've read on the subject of teenagers and drug/alcohol abuse, this is by far the best. The authors clearly spell out exactly why you're right to be worried and how to help. They explain how to conduct an "intervention" to cut through the teen's denial that drugs/alcohol is a problem for her or him. By presenting treatment options and contracts as her or his "choices," parents and others can also give up the sense of fear that leads to ineffectual efforts to control someone else's drinking or drug use. Once you let go and realize that--just as the teen you care about has a choice (including using)--you have a choice to impose consequences that range from mild to severe. The book is oddly reassuring and direct. A must-read for any parent or friend of a substance using teen.

Great Book!

This is truely an easy to read, step-by-step book. Explaining first the teenager's brain and thinking and what stresses a teenager has in their life, then going on to reasons for drug use, and practical, tangible ways to deal with it. This is a great book for any parent of a teenager to read, whether or not they have found their child trying drugs. It is a great "heads up" informative sourcebook. I esp liked the section on what special emotional needs that teens are looking to have fulfilled during adolescence. It is really helpful to read that as a parent of any teenager.

BLACKSMITHS, A MUST HAVE NEW BOOK

The Backyard Blacksmith by Ms. Simms is a an excellent addition to any blacksmithing library. She explains in plain english how to accomplish a task and the photography is excellent. Throughout the book are tips that even the advanced smith will benefit by reading. Safety, an all important issue these days, is well identified with good tips. As a 30 plus year veteran of blacksmithing as a hobby and leader of a large group, I highly recommend her book. Also, it is an affordable price range. Good luck and keep the fire burning.

Book Review of The Backyard Blacksmith

I have been to a blacksmithing rodeo or two and have seen most of the books intended for the beginner blacksmith. This one immediately jumps up to the top of my recommended list.

Ms. Sims is an artist and blacksmith who specializes in creating hand-forged functional ironwork. Her public art commissions include the Omaha Botanical Gardens in Nebraska, Lincoln Log State Historic Site in Illinois and Fordham University in New York. In additional to teaching blacksmithing classes and workshops, she has been a featured demonstrator for blacksmithing conferences throughout North America. She is the owner/operator of the Five Points Blacksmith Shop in Charleston, IL since 1993.

Folks, this is a get-your-hands dirty lady and in this book she shares her experience and expertise in the subject matter, but probably more importantly, has the ability to pass on just how it is done.

The Backyard Blacksmith will show you how, with some patience and working knowledge of metals, basic tools and techniques, blacksmithing can be easy to learn and a rewarding hobby. Through instructions and illustrations, readers will learn to make simple tools and useful items, such as nails, hinges and handles and also an interesting mix of artful projects, such as letter openers, door knockers and botanical ornaments.

In all over 20 projects are organized by difficulty level allowing new, novice or hobby blacksmiths to progress at their own pace and master/reinforce the skills they learned in earlier chapters.

Master Blackmith

Having served as a lifetime Blacksmith and recently retired, I've no doubt seen and read many books on this subject. This book by Lorelei Simms has in my opinion, the best content and presentation so far. It is very suitable for anyone starting out on this fascinating journey of metal forging as well as anybody looking for a good teaching resource.All the basics are covered as well as some useful background information such as practical knowledge of steels and heat treatments etc. I highly recommend it to all my students as a great reference source and a great addition to the book shelf.

Fans of Augusten Burroughs's darkly funny memoir Running with Scissors were left wondering at the end of that book what would become of young Augusten after his squalid and fascinating childhood ended. In Dry, we find that although adult Augusten is doing well professionally, earning a handsome living as an ad writer for a top New York agency, Burroughs's personal life is a disaster. His apartment is a sea of empty Dewar's bottles, he stays out all night boozing, and he dabs cologne on his tongue in an unsuccessful attempt to mask the stench of alcohol on his breath at work. When his employer insists he seek help, Burroughs ships out to Minnesota for detoxification, counseling, and amusingly told anecdotes about the use of stuffed animals in group therapy. But after a month of such treatment, he's back in Manhattan and tenuously sober. And while its one thing to lay off the sauce in rehab, Burroughs learns that it's quite another to resume your former life while avoiding the alcohol that your former life was based around. This quest to remain sober is made dramatically more difficult, and the tale more harrowing, when Burroughs begins an ill-advised romance with a crack addict. Certainly the "recovered alcoholic fighting to stay sober" tale is not new territory for a memoirist. Imagine coming home to find hundreds of empty scotch bottles and 1,452 empty beer bottles in your apartment. This is what Burroughs (Running with Scissors) encountered upon returning from Minnesota's Proud Institute (supposedly the gay alcohol rehab choice). "The truly odd part is that I really don't know how they got there," admits Burroughs in this autobiographical tale of being a prodigy with an extremely successful career in advertising and a drive to get as wasted as possible as often as possible. Burroughs's telling of the tale alternates among hilarious, pathetic, existential and hopeful. It is an earnest and cautionary tale of calamity, brimming with Sedaris-like darkly comic quips: "Making alcoholic friends is as easy as making sea monkeys." Burroughs's slight Southern accent and gentle yet glib delivery should summon empathy on the listener's part that may have been lost with another reader. From Minnesota, Burroughs returns to New York and participates in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Like James Frey in the similar yet very different book, A Million Little Pieces (see audio review, below), Burroughs believes that when rehab is over, he must walk into a bar to see if he can resist the temptation to drink. Though not a technique condoned by A.A., it certainly makes for a fascinating listening experience.

How to follow your successful my-childhood-was-so-bad-it-was-funny memoir? Why, with a then-my-alcoholism-was-so-bad-it-was-funny memoir, of course. Burroughs, who described in Running with Scissors [BKL Je 1 & 15 02] perhaps the funniest emotionally and sexually abusive family in memoir history, now tells the story of his adulthood. After infuriating his advertising coworkers by showing up at a series of meetings stinking of booze, Burroughs is sent to a recovery center for gays and lesbians in Minnesota. He sobers up, at least for a while, and begins to confront both the demons and the comic irrationality of addiction. The narrative descends into cliche-ridden recovery jargon now and again, but Burroughs openly acknowledges the triteness of it and allows us to laugh. Blessedly free from sentimentality and the predictable fall-and-rise plot of your average booze-soaked memoir, Burroughs' characters are well drawn and fresh, even when they rely on archetypes (there's a still-wet drinking buddy, for example, but he's a hilariously morbid undertaker). Burroughs again displays his talent for finding hope and hard-won laughs in the nastiest of situations. John Green

Another Great Memoir from Burroughs

Augusten Burroughs' last book (RUNNING WITH SCISSORS) chronicled his bizarre childhood, including his dysfunctional family, the even more dysfunctional family he lived with when his mother had a series of nervous breakdowns, and his relationship with a pedophile. DRY: A MEMOIR picks up about 10 years later; Burroughs has a successful career in New York advertising and is a raging alcoholic. He's in denial about his problem, so he's surprised when his co-workers stage an intervention and even more surprised when he reluctantly agrees to a 30-day rehab stint. The book follows his attempts to remain sober, deal with his past, and cope with some harmful romantic relationships.
The book often skewers the mental health system, replete with therapy-speak, AA meetings, and self-help lingo, However, Burroughs adopts a fairly benign, almost affectionate, tone toward mental health workers. Ultimately, DRY is filled with the kind of wit and attitude you've come to expect from Burroughs. I laughed out loud quite a few times, and I felt some real suspense reading to see whether he'd relapse.
Burroughs is quickly establishing himself as a quirky and talented writer. Although he may be pegged by some as a "gay author," his work is pretty universal and likely to appeal to many different audiences. I most highly recommend this book, and I look forward to reading more of his work.

You will enjoy this book IF...

You will like this book:
*If you have not read too many other of Burroughs' books (some of the life details get repetitive)
*If you appreciate a cynical outlook and a dry sense of humor
*If you can handle raw, sometimes harsh details
*If you are alright reading about gay relationships and a few intimate details
*If you are moved by an honest struggle with addiction in life and want to get a glimpse of that struggle
*If you are not looking for flowery prose, but prefer direct, easy to read material that flows and doesn't linger on any one part of his life too much.

I started to give this book 4 stars, wanted to give it 3.5 (not an option) and settled on 3. It's a good, easy read - interesting and pointed. The reason I settled on 3 instead of 4 stars is that too much cynical gets tiring even for a cynical person. It is a rather dark read with some humor in the honesty of his arrogance and pride. Definitely a 3 1/2 star book.

Hilarious and Heartrending

Augusten Burroughs is one of the most entertaining writers on the current scene. After reading his RUNNING WITH SCISSORS and accepting the fact that it was truly a memoir (ie, he really DID have that childhood!), most of us who loved that book couldn't wait to see if he would be able to maintain his particular level of genius dry humor. Well, here it is. DRY is the continued life of this amazing writer. It is one of the most hilarious books around - Burroughs candid observations written sotto voce without quotation marks could be the dialogue for the best standup comedians on any stage. And he is not kidding!
A book about alcoholism, or rather about any kind of addiction (crack cocaine, alcohol, sex, heroine, etc), is not the expected basis for a comedic book. But Burroughs takes us through blitzkrieg drunkeness, living at the bottom of the toilet, commiting to rehab, then the whole process of AA meetings and therapy and manages to make us laugh uncontrollably. His cast of characters includes his co-workers in his successful career in advertising, his pre-rehab friends, his acquaintances from his gay rehab group, his assorted roommates and quasilovers, and his real devotion to Pighead, a would-be lover now dying of AIDS. Doesn't sound funny, does it? But life has its own way of offering perspectives in bizarre focal fields and Burroughs knows just how to make it all work. His life is a fantasy trip, and a dangerous one at that, but through all his highs and lows he keeps us on his side, and we willingly laugh and cry right along with him. This is a superb second book. Read them both - and then take a little time for introspection about how we all interact, knee deep in our foibles.

Caution!

Normally, I like reviews that give a short outline of the plot of a book or movie, because without that, you don't know whether you'd like to spend the time. However, unless you're really wavering, I would strongly advise that you to read the book before looking at the reviews below -- Ira Levin is THE MASTER of suspense -- like Stephen King says, his plots work like intricate timepieces -- and for maximum enjoyment you should know as little as possible about the book before you start.
Odds are, however, that you already know it's about cloning and Nazis, so I'll go ahead and say this: I put off reading the book for years because I wasn't interested in either of those subjects. But "The Boys" is not what you'd expect at all, and superlatives can't describe Levin's skill. "Couldn't put it down" doesn't touch it.
Plus, any gore or references to sex and violence are only what is necessary for the sake of the plot, which is important as far as I'm concerned.
And, just like with his other books, this is more than just a roller coaster ride that you walk off of and forget. There's satisfying poetic justice, interesting moral contrast, and important ethical questions raised -- not just the usual pronouncements about weren't-the-Nazis-terrible or isn't-cloning-awfully-dangerous, either. It's one of those books you love to discuss with a friend.

Enjoyable

The story does a nice job of drawing you into the plot. A young boy working clandestinely in South America wiretaps a meeting of some very high level men talking about killing 94 people. As he relays his story, and his recording, over the phone to someone he knows would want to hear it, he is murdered. The story now is about the receiver of the call figuring out the plot and foiling it.

Quite an easy read and the plot is believable. For me though the book lacked character development insomuch as we really aren't given time to get to know the players well enough.

From a cat and mouse standpoint it's a great read. As the tired, overwrought and underfunded hero deciphers the call he almost heard and translates it into a plot that has to be foiled at all costs. His efforts to apprehend the plot perpetrators are quite well thought out.

As I mentioned, an easy read and, a pretty good movie too. Try and read the book before seeing the movie as the book adds some background the movie doesn't.

a somewhat dated yet very enjoyable thriller..

The Boys From Brazil is probably better known by its late 1970s screen adaptation than the novel by Ira ("Rosemary's Baby") Levin. Since I hadn't seen the movie I thought I'd give the book a try. And I was pleasently surprised.
The story is about elderly Nazis in Brazil, led by the ingenius yet wicked Mengele, seeking to clone Hitler. In fact they had done this some years back, cloning 94 genetic equivalents of bad ol' Adolph. Now in the mid-1970s they need to embark on a murderous rampage to fulfill their objectives (..no spoilers here). Bring in an aged Nazi hunter from Vienna and we have a tight, compulsively readable little thriller.
Of course we know really that the story deep down is very contrived, even for when it was written (1970s). So I recommend not taking the story too seriously. It is well-written, and there are a couple of most memorable scenes.
Bottom line: bio-terrorism and Nazis. Turn off your brain and enjoy.
