From Publishers Weekly
A science project for young Gedanken turns into an exploration of space and time when her Uncle Albert steps in. Uncle Albert is a famous scientist, and it's his imagination that sends Gedanken into the "largest spacecraft never built" to examine near light-speed phenomena. This Albert is no Einstein, but with his help, Gedanken is led through Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity in a painlessly educational manner. This fictional approach to highly technical material has the obvious drawback--it is didactic. Nevertheless, the author's clear, single-minded presentation of the material does work. Although no young readers will mistake these somewhat talky adventures for science fiction in the classic sense, Stannard's easily understood explication of this century's most elegant and thought-provoking scientific ideas makes it worthwhile. Ages 11-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- The point of this novel is not to engage readers in the lives of its characters, but to explain Einstein's theory of relativity. Uncle Albert and his niece Gedanken unravel and reveal abstract concepts through a computer and a spacecraft that allow her to travel in time and space. For the most part, the concepts do become comprehensible, but the device of a fictional framework supported by a contrived plot proves intrusive. The dialogue is plodding and talky, the characterization weighed down by cliches and repetitiousness. ( " That's stupid," Gedanken frequently responds to her kindly, eccentric, brilliant uncle.) The personification of the computer and the giggling light-beams do not give credence to the scientific demonstrations. Packaging a discussion of difficult-to-grasp scientific theory as fiction undermines both readers who want straightforward information and those who are after a good story. Necia Apfel's It's All Relative (Lothrop, 1985) is a more lucid entry to Einstein's theories. --Susan H. Patron, Los Angeles Public Library

Relativity made clear
By Rick Fisher
This is the best introductory exposition of relativity theory ever written. As a book, it occupies that strange middle ground between fiction and non-fiction, much like the Magic Schoolbus books (where should the librarian put them?), but it is for a somewhat older age group. By somewhat older, I mean only that it has fewer pictures: I'd put it in with all the Milton Bradley/Parker Brothers games, and say it's for ages 8 to 80. For ANYONE who is interested in relativity, no matter what their age, this book is a perfect place to start. Check your library, and if you can't find it try to place an "out of print" order. This book is a gem.

Governments as Interest Groups: Intergovernmental Lobbying and the Federal System, by Anne M. Cammisa

State and local governments emerged as important interest groups in the 1960s, as that decade witnessed a rapid expansion of federal social programs administered at the state and local levels. The 1970s and 1980s were distinguished by attempts to give states and localities more responsibility over such programs. The present day is marked by an even more purposeful return of responsibility and policymaking to state and local governments, both because of severe deficits at the federal level and an ideological shift toward federalism. This work examines the impact state and local governments have had and can have on the federal government, asserting that they can be important factors in the creation of policy. The author looks at the intergovernmental lobbying tactics―successful and unsuccessful―of five states and local lobbying groups: the National League of Cities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, the National Association of Counties, the National Conference of State Legislatures, and the National Governor's Association. Her study will be of interest to scholars and policy-makers at the local, state, and federal government levels.

Great Insight Into The Federal Government As The Pusher-Man
By Dr. Jones
The federal government has grown from its humble origins to the behemoth it is today. The question why this has become a basic fact of modern life. Part of it rests in the efforts of federal politcians to secure their electoral futures through the provision of aid to the states, part of it also rests in the federal government's wish to ensure standards across local communities, but another part rests in the efforts of the state and local governments to lobby for federal aid. These governments go to the federal government because they want to secure more benefits for their residents but without increasing the taxes they collect from these individuals. They do this because it helps local politicians. This book tells how they "apply" pressure to the federal government. Camissa does a great job of illustrating these governments secure benefits, as well illustrating how the system works for those involved.

Dresden: A Survivor's Story (Kindle Single), by Victor Gregg

In Slaughterhouse-Five Kurt Vonnegut fictionalized his time as a prisoner of war in 1945. Vonnegut was imprisoned in a deep cellar in Dresden while a firestorm raged through the city, wiping out generations of innocent lives. Victor Gregg remained above ground. This is his true story.

In four air raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 772 Lancaster bombers of the British Royal Air Force and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces dropped more than 3,900 tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on Dresden. The resulting firestorm destroyed 15 square kilometres, or 6 square miles, of the city centre. 25,000 people, mostly civilians, were estimated to have been killed. Post-war discussion of whether or not the attacks were justified has led to the bombing becoming one of the moral issues of the Second World War.

An established soldier turning his uniform to the 10th Parachute Regiment in 1944, Victor Gregg was captured at Arnhem where he volunteered to be sent to a work camp rather than become another faceless number in the huge POW camps. With two failed escape attempts under his belt, Gregg was eventually caught sabotaging a factory and sent for execution.

Gregg's first-hand narrative, personal and punchy, sees him through the trauma and carnage of the Dresden bombing. After the raid he spent five days helping to recover a city of innocent civilians, thousands of whom had died in the fire storm, trapped underground in human ovens. As order was restored his life was once more in danger and he escaped to the east, spending the last weeks of the war with the Russians.

Harrowing and vivid, Gregg draws us in to the heart-wrenching, often futile attempts to save lives, and the tentative friendships and near-misses along the way.

"The sheer horror remains burned into my memory."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
As survivors of evil grow older, the need to ensure witness intensifies. Gregg is in his nineties, yet he remains haunted by the sights of the Dresden fire bombing. In 1944, successive nights of English bombing destroyed the city and the civilian population of Dresden. Incendiary bombs were then followed by block busters and then fire bombs. The. Author describes the aftermath in great detail. He was there as an English POW. The aftermath is here stipulated in detail.

As every monstrosity of war, this had a reason. Gregg is not a pacifist. He simply makes the point that extreme acts against civilians need to be outlawed, and our only chance of this is to never forget. So I recommend this book for the knowledge it imparts and for the imperative that we bear witness.

The Dresden firebombing as seen through the eyes of an Allied POW
By J. Chambers
I've read a number of accounts of the firebombing of Dresden in World War II, but "Dresden: A Survivor's Story" is the first one by an Allied soldier. Ironically, as a POW charged with sabotaging a factory, British paratrooper Victor Gregg had been sent to Dresden to be executed. When the RAF bombers dropped their bombs on the night of February 13, 1945, Gregg was one of the few Allied prisoners to escape death. Spending the next few days working alongside Germans trying to rescue survivors, he was exposed to the true horrors of the deadly bombing.

His story of that experience is written simply, with no need to embellish the details. In the afterword, the author has a retrospective on the morality of the bombing. Whether you agree with his opinion or not, his story is well worth reading.

Absorbing
By Berkshire man
The author's memories of such a big event in WWII was absorbing. It was short, but utterly worth the read. If only more people who witnessed other events would do something like this, so we had the "human" view of the big events.

Received this book in a timely fashion. I have noticed a few typos within the first couple of chapters and much of the book seems repetitive of other counseling books that I have read. This book is "just okay", not the most interesting for sure.

[This is the MP3CD audiobook format in vinyl case.]

[Read by C.M. Hebert]

''I now pronounce you husband and wife.'' There are few phrases as sobering, with the possible exceptions of ''We have lift-off'' and ''This country is at war.'' Yet, as they have done for centuries, millions of courageous men and women continue to walk down the aisle every year, without so much as a job description. Now, in her most autobiographical book, Erma Bombeck puts it all in loving and laughing perspective, as she looks back on her own forty-three-year-but-who's-counting marriage.

You don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard to LOVE this book!
By Jan Ruley
The first time I saw Fast N Loud I was in a small restaurant in the U.S. Virgin Islands. At the bar was a large group of fisherman (at least 20) gathered around a small TV. One man was loudly translating every word Richard and Aaron spoke into Spanish and the group watching was laughing and hanging on to every word. I had to find out what show this was and who these guys on tv were. A couple of months later I was in the same bar, must have been a Monday, cause all the guys were gathered around the TV watching/translating Fast N Loud again. Fast forward to now, and I can see why Richard has such a great following and family of fans all over the world.
Everyone loves to see a good before and after, the show does that very well. But behind the finished build, we all know there's a lot of work that goes unseen (only so much you can show in an hour). A lot of people think Richard was made in a day, like the builds on the show, but this book dives deep into the beginning of a dream, all the hard work it took just to step away and pursue the dream, the people who believed in his dream, enough to jump whole heartedly into it, and eventually how 11 years later he became an overnight success. It's a really inspiring story with lessons that can apply to anyone, you don't have to love cars, the show or even Richard. Give it a read and you might be inspired to keep going, keep hustling and keep dreaming.
I've had the pleasure of working with Richard and Gas Monkey Garage on a couple of video projects through a client and vendor of theirs. I'm impressed by their humility, realness and overall work ethic. I thought I knew the whole story, but this book filled in the blanks. I'm excited to see how the next chapters unfold.

Fast, Loud, and Arrogant
By FL Girl
As a huge fan of the show Fast and Loud, I have always liked Richard Rawlings. His personality is so big, as is his motivation and drive. My favorite part was about his early life before his TV show. I think the beginning of the book was better than the end. It was excellent to read about how he became successful over the years and the story of his relationship with his wife. It was truly a story of a self made man, who is charming, motivated and who had a little luck. The last part of the book he's giving advice on how to flip cars, and he kind of came off as bragging about how great he is. I wish he could have been a little more humble. He has an excellent success story, but he ended up sounded a little more self absorbed than I had expected. I did enjoy the peek into his early life/career, and learning more about Aaron. But, the book could have wrapped up before he started trying to train the amateur car flipper to be like him.

Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, by Yuval Noah Harari

New York Times Bestseller

A Summer Reading Pick for President Barack Obama, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg

From a renowned historian comes a groundbreaking narrative of humanity’s creation and evolution—a #1 international bestseller—that explores the ways in which biology and history have defined us and enhanced our understanding of what it means to be “human.”

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six different species of humans inhabited Earth. Yet today there is only one—homo sapiens. What happened to the others? And what may happen to us?

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book that begins about 70,000 years ago with the appearance of modern cognition. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

Dr. Harari also compels us to look ahead, because over the last few decades humans have begun to bend laws of natural selection that have governed life for the past four billion years. We are acquiring the ability to design not only the world around us, but also ourselves. Where is this leading us, and what do we want to become?

Featuring 27 photographs, 6 maps, and 25 illustrations/diagrams, this provocative and insightful work is sure to spark debate and is essential reading for aficionados of Jared Diamond, James Gleick, Matt Ridley, Robert Wright, and Sharon Moalem.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for February 2015: Yuval Noah Harari has some questions. Among the biggest: How did Homo sapiens (or Homo sapiens sapiens , if you’re feeling especially wise today) evolve from an unexceptional savannah-dwelling primate to become the dominant force on the planet, emerging as the lone survivor out of six distinct, competing hominid species? He also has some answers, and they’re not what you’d expect. Tackling evolutionary concepts from a historian’s perspective, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind, describes human development through a framework of three not-necessarily-orthodox “Revolutions”: the Cognitive, the Agricultural, and the Scientific. His ideas are interesting and often amusing: Why have humans managed to build astonishingly large populations when other primate groups top out at 150 individuals? Because our talent for gossip allows us to build networks in societies too large for personal relationships between everyone, and our universally accepted “imagined realities”--such as money, religion, and Limited Liability Corporations—keep us in line. Who cultivated whom, humans or wheat?. Wheat. Though the concepts are unusual and sometimes heavy (as is the book, literally) Harari’s deft prose and wry, subversive humor make quick work of material prone to academic tedium. He’s written a book of popular nonfiction (it was a bestseller overseas, no doubt in part because his conclusions draw controversy) landing somewhere in the middle of a Venn diagram of genetics, sociology, and history. Throughout, Harari returns frequently to another question: Does all this progress make us happier, our lives easier? The answer might disappoint you. --Jon Foro

From the Back Cover

One hundred thousand years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations, and human rights; to trust money, books, and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables, and consumerism? And what will our world be like in the millennia to come?

In Sapiens, Professor Yuval Noah Harari spans the whole of human history, from the very first humans to walk the earth to the radical—and sometimes devastating—breakthroughs of the Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific Revolutions. Drawing on insights from biology, anthropology, paleontology, and economics, and incorporating full-color illustrations throughout the text, he explores how the currents of history have shaped our human societies, the animals and plants around us, and even our personalities. Have we become happier as history has unfolded? Can we ever free our behavior from the legacy of our ancestors? And what, if anything, can we do to influence the course of the centuries to come?

Bold, wide-ranging, and provocative, Sapiens integrates history and science to challenge everything we thought we knew about being human: our thoughts, our actions, our heritage...and our future.

The Broad Sweep Of Human History
By John D. Cofield
A standard history of the human race begins with Paleolithic proto-humans, traces the development of modern man or homo sapiens sapiens, then chronicles the beginnings and expansions of human civilization from agriculture to the present. Yuval Noah Harari's Sapiens follows that path, but with several intriguing twists. The result is a fascinating book which will challenge pre-conceptions and occasionally annoy or even anger the reader, but will always intrigue.

Harari focusses on the three great revolutions of human history: Cognitive, Agricultural, and Scientific. He asks how "An Animal of No Significance" managed to become the dominant life form, and whether that animal's learning to produce his own food and then to further harness the natural world to his will through science were boons or setbacks, both for that animal and for the rest of the biosphere. In 20 brilliant chapters Harari asks his readers to consider not only what did happen, but what might have occurred had things turned out slightly differently (the roles of chance and accident are given a lot of attention.) He reveals the mutually agreed upon "stories" that helped shape human societies and questions their validity, not to disillusion but to challenge his readers. At times the tone is unavoidably cynical, but at others there's a real optimistic air (leavened by some cautions here and there). I found Harari's ideas fascinating, especially those in his final chapter "The End of Homo Sapiens" and in his brief but important "Afterword: The Animal That Became a God."

Readers who are looking for detailed chronicles listing, for example, the Emperors of China, Kings and Queens of England, or Presidents of the United States should look elsewhere. But readers who want to be challenged and enlightened will find Sapiens a most enjoyable work. I'm a retired AP World History teacher, and while I was reading there were many moments which made me wish I was back in the classroom so I could share Harari's ideas with my high school students. That's high praise indeed, but Sapiens deserves it and much more.

Masterpiece! Our myths make us who we are
By Gary
This book is a masterpiece. I feel fortunate that I discovered it before most other people. I discovered it by reading an extremely negative review for this book in the Wall Street Journal written by a historian. (In his defense, he just didn't understand that this is not a history book, and he had no idea what Harari is getting at).

This book never stops in challenging my understanding of our place in the universe. What we believe in determines what we want to want. Sapiens are distinguished by our ability to believe in fictions. The cognitive revolutions starts with the first set of hypothetical stories we allow ourselves to believe in whether they are true or not. The real importance is that the family, kin, friends, and community share those beliefs.

Our fictions allow us to cooperate. They gives us the imaginary order that is necessary for societies to act together. Corporations are not people, they do not exist in reality. One can not point to a corporation. It's not the buildings, or the executives or any other physical entities that make the corporation, but it is our belief that makes them real. The author notes that the word for corporation comes from the Latin, corpus, the same as in the body (corpus) of Christ within the transubstantiation.

Religion gives us comfort from the absurd and comforts us to accept death. Science (and its offshoot, technology) does the opposite. It gives us knowledge leading to life extension and makes our time alive more comfortable. The Gilgamesh Project of life extension is a major character is this book.

The myths we create can never be logically consistent without contradictions. Perfect liberty will always conflict with perfect equality. Knowledge about the real world can never be 'universal, necessary, and certain', but we only get glimpses of reality by considering the 'particular, contingent, and probable'. Our myths give us comfort and subjective well being, but they are never without contradictions.

The acceptance of our myths give us our commonality. He'll even say that because of the myths we choose to believe in they determine our progress. When cultures (imaginary orders) collectively know Truth, they have no reason to proceed. Biology enables us, cultures forbid us. The most important words necessary for progress are "I don't know, but I want to find out". He connects Imperialism with Capitalism leading to seeking knowledge (and developing science). Only those who do not believe they know everything need to search.

If I were to have ever written a book (which fortunately for the reading public, I save all my writing only for book reviews!) this is the book I would have written. I believe this will be a classic in the future and am glad I discovered it. The author has written this book to make sure we do everything in our power to understand that the things we believe in will determine who we will be going forward. The myths we choose to believe in will determine what we become.

By Will Coddingtgon
As someone who is very intrigued by the history of humans at the edge of evolution, I was so excited to begin this book. The first 50 pages fulfilled my expectations but after that Harari's opinions and the book's chronological meanderings began to confuse fact from fiction. Many segments could have been removed to improve cohesion and focus. I continued lackadaisically through 300 pages before putting it down. Overall Harari's yearning for the "idyllic" hunter-gatherer lifestyle overshadowed his potential ability to tell the incredible story of how we came to be.
