Of all the Prep Books for AP CALC, this is the BEST (and I bought them all)

My son is currently taking Calculus AB and will be moving into Calculus BC, I purchased about 5 different prep books to help him prepare for the exam (both AB, BC, and Clep). At first, I thought going with the BC book would suffice for questions for the AB part of the exam and for most people, if you are doing both, you can get by with just the BC book. However, since my son's teacher asks questions from actual AP tests on his exams, I could not find enough Free Response AB questions in the BC book, so I bought the AB book also to get more questions. There is a lot of overlap in content in both the books by the same author. However, this is HANDS DOWN the best book from all the different groups in terms of questions, examples, preparation, etc. If you only buy one book, THIS (or the BC version) is the one to get. It comes with a good review of each unit, problems to practice for each unit and shows you the answers worked out for each set of problems. It also has 3 full practice tests with the problems worked out. I really liked that once you worked through them all you could find patterns of the types of problems to expect and how to do them. I feel that this book will prepare my son better than any of the other books we have for AP Calculus. He is also going to go ahead and take the Clep exam and we have a different book for that, the Clep, has a slightly different "flavor" than the AP Calc so if you are considering that test in addition or instead of, I would still suggest this book and the books with practice clep tests. This still helps you better than any clep books in overall review but the clep books will help you prepare for their type questions. The BC book, as I said, repeats content but adds the extra units with sequences and series and the few other topics scattered throughout such as parametric​ equations, etc.

An AMAZING work...but there is much more to this story...

Graham Hancock has done another marvelous job drawing connections among ancient information in a level headed manner, and has presented a brilliantly coherent framework that explains many enigmas.

It is sadly unsurprising that the largely conservative and ossified mainstream always puts up heavy resistance to this information; as this is all too often the case to any challenger of the status quo among academia.

What we've learned from history is that hardly anyone ever learns from history.

To have a deeper understanding of the material I highly recommend reading Fingerprints of the Gods if you have not yet, as this book will make much more sense with that background knowledge. It does well enough on its own, and presents a brilliant case that a planetary impact and the global floods/cataclysm that resulted was the main culprit in nearly wiping out an advanced civilization in pre-history, however the weight of this revelation is much heavier if you are acquainted with the thick foundation already laid out in Fingerprints of the gods.

The two key elements missing from Fingerprints were the smoking gun that caused the deluge and conclusive evidence of the advanced civilizations presence thousands of years before what we thought was the advent of civilization. This book has both in spades.

Gobekli Tepe is a massive megalithic site crafted by highly skilled stone workers over 10,0000 years ago, and Gunung Padang, another fascinating site in Indonesia, is looking like it might be even older.

The ongoing studies and debate surrounding the Younger Dryas impact hypothesis are analysed and simplified. They seem to have hit the ice caps that covered North America and Northern Europe, leaving little if any craters but causing massive floods, fires, and so on. The evidence is clear enough, and made even more profound if we keep in mind the countless ancient "myths" around the globe that give detailed descriptions of the event. Resistance to the hypothesis, and even outright dismissal by the more dogmatic and conservative sectors of the scientific community, is always to be expected.

Resistance to paradigm-shattering information has always occurred, even in the scientific arena. This is, however, only one piece of an incredibly important puzzle that we desperately need to figure out if we are to pull ourselves out of the mess we are in.

Hancock's notion of a "species with amnesia" is far, far more serious than perhaps even he realized. There is ongoing research, conducted by Tony Wright and others, indicating the development of our neural system is literally compromised and has been progressively reverting to a more primitive mammalian type. Hancock is aware and a fan of the research but it gets curiously omitted here, possibly because of the overwhelming task it would be integrating it into the book, and making its focus too broad. Though it fits in perfectly with his research on psychedelics - one of the main approaches ancient cultures have employed throughout the entire world for millenia in order to address and treat our condition - and because of the obvious gaps it fills in regards to the nature of these "magicians of the gods".

Were they really regarded as nearly having god-like status because of their superior technology and craftsmanship, or was there more to it than that? If we take the ancients for their word, then they had cognitive abilities far beyond what even we would consider normal. You would be hard pressed to find ancient accounts, or even accounts of modern tribal groups in the amazon and elsewhere, that believe their ancestors were more primitive. They virtually always regarded them as more advanced, and not just technologically. Cognitively and spiritually. They knew a lot about consciousness and sought to preserve that knowledge while keeping the fire of civilization kindled amidst the chaos of the cataclysm. We can conclude they did very well because all across the world can be found ancient medicinal and consciousness methods of all sorts (yoga, meditation, alchemy, shamanism, herbalism, etc. ). Even though many have devolved over time.

But we don't simply have to take the ancients word for it about this. There is a mountain of evidence for this scenario, which should not come as a surprise since nearly every bright man or women throughout the ages has deemed humanity as being virtually insane. Our culture and civilization is a reflection of our dysfunctional state of mind. The ancients almost universally regarded their ancestors as more advanced, and do not talk about progressive advancements. Is this just because of the shattering effects of the cataclysms at the end of the last ice age, or is there more to it than that? Why then do they also speak of mans nature degrading even before the cataclysm? And why do they even engage in various techniques and medicines (psychedelics, meditation, fasting, sleep deprivation, and so on) to address this condition at all?

Our brain is the most complex and chemically sensitive piece of tissue in the known universe. Perhaps it is no coincidence that it evolved in the African tropics, in a symbiotic relationship with one of the most complex biochemical environments/foods on the planet. Like the countless "myths" about the cataclysm at the end of the last ice age, these "myths" of a lost paradisaical golden age of human consciousness may have some basis as well. The food we were eating had incredibly complex biochemistry and was intimately involved in the development and operating environment of our brain for millenia. You would not expect to be able to build a working vehicle out of materials completely irrelevant to it's original design and development specifications...yet we assume our brain will develop and function normally on literally "junk" food. Why is this simple engineering logic so non-existent in our society?

Perhaps we are just so deluded at this point that we are blind to our own condition. A species with amnesia, literally.

Research Tony Wrights book Return to the Brain of Eden. You will not be disappointed. The forward by Dennis McKenna, the legendary brother of Terence McKenna, explains the gist well enough to give you a taste.

I'd normally feel strange plugging someones book in a review on another book, but the connections between these two areas is agonizingly obvious and very few seem to be drawing the pieces together. Both Hancock's work, Wright's, and others have changed my life in ways I can't even begin to download into such a feeble medium as language, and I'd like to share that experience with all of you as we collectively journey forward on this mind boggling ride we are on.

Light at the end of the tunnel

I am a huge Graham Hancock fan, having read most of his books. I appreciate who he is and what he stands for, his holistic approach to consciousness issues and fierce commitment to uncover what is hidden is unparalleled in my opinion. I couldn't wait for this book after reading fingerprints. After the first few chapters I was becoming disappointed. I felt like I was reading scientific paper after scientific paper about scientific disciplines I had very little interest in. I wondered who Graham was writing to, it certainly wasn't the general public, maybe to a geological convention. It was too repetitive, and too technical, too deep of a foundation and too much that never tied into the rest of the material until much later in the book., I understood the key point he was making after the first chapter, but he kept beating the dead horse chapter after chapter. I thought it would never end. IMO, the author could have made this a much more readable book by summarizing half of the technical dialogue of the beginning several chapters and tying it into the excellent and fascinating material in the second half of the book. He could have put the majority of the case studies and biographies etc. into the appendices for those that need to see the multiple supporting arguments. It was not my favorite Graham book, but could be the most important. He masterfully weaves all the tangents and new evidence together to make a compelling point.

Another great book from the author... as expected.

Thankfully Mr. Hancock never disappoints. Well researched and as always, a very well written book. The author has a spectacular way of giving a very large amount of useful and intriguing information, while at the same time managing to keep the book very interesting throughout. The book is fairly long, so you definitely get your money's worth as far as the context and all the different subjects that are explored. Plus, the book keeps the reading from getting boring like some other books on similar subjects tend to. That's why I appreciate Mr. Hancocks books... he's one of the few authors that you can read from cover to cover without going through long, monotonous boring sections. With other authors there seems to be a lot of filler writing, or even worse, some of these so called experts start to seriously get into ego trips... all of which really annoys me, and makes finishing some books a chore at times. None of that garbage happening in Mr. Hancocks work. Get the book, its well worth the price of admission.

Don't even think about it

This is a review of the Audio Book version of this title. Simply put, it stinks. I was a T.A. at univeristy level communications production, and have heard student sound projects with more production value than this audio book. The multiple voices are poorly cast for a husband and wife duo who have arguments that aren't realistic or helpful. He sounds gay, she sounds like a materialistic bimbo. Each time they cut to an interview segment of Nierenberg, there is a constant buzz that is noticable. Poor recordings. If it had been a series of records of Nierenberg speaking, it would have been more informative. Although some of the information was useful, it is few and far between, and the low production value of the cassette takes attention away from that. It is obvious that Nierenberg knows his stuff, but this production was not a great communication tool for him. They may have gotten my dollars, but at least now they won't get yours if you are reading this. Two words: Stay Away!

Win-Win negotiating

The term "Win-Win" has become an every day buzz word. I read Gerard's book nearly thirty years ago when the term was really something new. He actually coined the phrase "Everybody Wins." Virtually the same concept.
His examples are creative and pertain to real life situations. It is good to read a book by someone who has actually been there and done that. His other books are quite informative also. ;-)

Worth wading through the fluff

Although this book suffers a bit from the author's desire to tell lot's of "great deals I did" stories, the non-fluffy content in the book is worth wading through the rest for. There's a good chapter on strategy and tactics. All in all, i'd say about 1/3 to 1/2 of this book is meaningful content.

By the end of 1942, 1.4 million Jews had been killed by the Einsatzgruppen that followed the German army eastward; by the end of the war, nearly two million had been murdered in Russia and Eastern Europe. Of the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, about one-third fell in the territories of the USSR. The single most important text documenting that slaughter is The Black Book, compiled by two renowned Russian authors Ilya Ehrenburg and Vasily Grossman. Until now, The Black Book was only available in English in truncated editions. Because of its profound significance, this new and definitive English translation of The Complete Black Book of Russian Jewry is a major literary and intellectual event.

From the time of the outbreak of the war, Ehrenburg and Grossman collected the eyewitness testimonies that went into The Black Book. As early as 1943 they were planning its publication; the first edition appeared in 1944. During the years immediately after the war, Grossman assisted Ehrenburg in compiling additional materials for a second edition, which appeared in 1946 (in English as well as Russian).

Since the fall of the Soviet regime, Irina Ehrenburg, the daughter of Ilya Ehrenburg, has recovered the lost portions of the manuscript sent to Yad Vashem. The texts recovered by Ms. Ehrenburg include numerous documents that had been censored from the original manuscript, as well as items that had been hidden by the Grossman family. In addition, she verified and, where appropriate, corrected the accuracy of documents that had already appeared in earlier editions of The Black Book.

About the Author

Ilya Ehrenburg (1891-1967) was a Soviet novelist and journalist. He is best known for his six volumes of memoirs.

Vasily Grossman (1905-1964) was a major Soviet writer. His most important novel is Life and Fate.

David Patterson is Bornblum Chair of Judaic Studies at the University of Memphis. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Holocaust, and has won the Koret Jewish Book Award.
 

Irving Louis Horowitz (1929-2012) was Hannah Arendt Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers University. He was the founder and served as chairman of the board and editorial director of Transaction Publishers. 

David Patterson is Bornblum Chair of Judaic Studies at the University of Memphis. He is the author of numerous books and articles on the Holocaust, and has won the Koret Jewish Book Award.

It Will Make a Permanent Impression

For those interested or curious about the format of this book, it's not your typical chapter-based book. Rather it is a VAST collection of stories submitted by survivors and witnesses. Some of them are very short, being a paragraph or two of powerful testimony, and some are detailed 20-page stories. Each 'collection' of stories are broken up by the country from which they occurred in. The end areas are slightly more broad in what they cover however it's all pertinent to Soviet suffering.

The impact it will have on you will be a lasting one, it's difficult to describe, but you will think about these true events long after you are done with the book. They will be permanently implanted into your psyche. For example, the account of the staggering events at Babi Yar in the Ukraine describe so poignantly what happened at the ravine that day, your heart hurts. It is merely one story in this tome of horrors.

There is, however, one complaint I have with this book. It is not regarding content, it is about the editing of the book. It is littered with grammar errors - far more than an average book. There is a glaring mistake probably once every three or four pages. Words are misspelled or entirely forgotten causing a stutter in the sentence. The editor, David Patterson, is apparently a professor and yet his grammar is horrible. If you're reading this David, send me a copy of the manuscript - I'll edit it for you, free of charge.

The first great witness of the Shoah

I take this account from Robert Chandler's article on 'Life and Fate' which appeared in Prospect magazine. Chandler is one of Grossman's translators, and an outstanding interpreter and commentator on his work.

" In 1943, after the German surrender at Stalingrad, Grossman was with the first red army units to liberate the Ukraine. He learned about Babi Yar, where 100,000 people, most of them Jews, were massacred. Soon afterwards, in Berdichev, he learned the details of his mother's death. His story "The Old Teacher" and the article "Ukraine without Jews" are among the first accounts of the Shoah in any language. And Grossman's vivid yet sober "The Hell of Treblinka" (late 1944), the first article in any language about a Nazi death camp, was republished and used as testimony in the Nuremberg trials.

Grossman was the first to research both the massacres in the Ukraine that marked the beginning of the Shoah and the death camps of Poland that were its culmination. The SS tried to destroy all trace of Treblinka, but Grossman interviewed local peasants and the 40 survivors and reconstructed how the camp functioned. He writes perceptively about the role played by deceit, about how the "SS psychiatrists of death" managed "to confuse people's minds once more, to sprinkle them with hope... 'Women and children must take their shoes off... Stockings must be put into shoes ... Be tidy... Going to the bathhouse, you must have your documents, a towel...'"

The official Soviet line, however, was that all nationalities had suffered equally under Hitler; the standard retort to those who emphasised the suffering of Jews was "Do not divide the dead!" Admitting that Jews constituted the overwhelming majority of the dead would have entailed admitting that other Soviet nationalities--and especially Ukrainians--had been accomplices in the genocide; in any case, Stalin was antisemitic. From 1943 to 1946, along with Ilya Ehrenburg, Grossman worked for the Jewish anti-fascist committee on The Black Book, a documentary account of the massacres of Jews on Soviet and Polish soil. It was never published."

Grossman, the great Soviet war correspondent was a heroic man of truth, who followed the Red Army in all the major battles of the war, including Stalingrad. The 'horrors' he saw in the concentration- camps moved him to the writing of this work. His own mother had been murdered in 1941 with thirty- thousand other Jews in the Ukranian town of Berditchev.
Only the realization that Stalin was deliberately persecuting the Jews led Grossman, an assimilated Jew to heroically identify with his own people.
His honesty, his courage in recording the horrible realities of this book are the very qualities which make him such a distinctively great writer.
