Typical "For Dummies" Perfection

This book covers it all and leaves no stone unturned, which is typical of any "For Dummies" book. Keep in mind this book is about the planning, building, functions, and construction of beehives. This book is NOT about beekeeping in general, as the title should tell you, but still--take note!

If you are a beekeeper who would like to learn how to build your own hives, or if you are a carpenter or craftsperson who'd like to make money making hives for beekeepers, then this is an excellent resource for you. We haven't been keeping bees for too long, but we've learned that the hives and equipment can add up! We frequently search Craigslist and other sources for handmade hives and accessories. Anyone learning to build beehives should enjoy their profits, as beekeeping is a growing hobby and many beekeepers are in need.

Or, if you'd simply like to build one or two hives for yourself, this is still a valuable resource. The book covers several styles of hives for construction, such as the Langstroth and a top bar hive and an observation hive. There are probably many creative hives out there to be discovered, this book covers several of the more common.

The diagrams and images are clear and helpful in understanding hive construction and function. The book also covers many common hive accessories and how to construct them, such as top feeders, hive stands, solar wax melters (that one is new to us!), and frames. Like I said, no stone has been left unturned. If you are interested in hive construction, look no further.

This is probably the 2nd book I'd say is a must have for beekeepers, the first being The Beekeeper's Bible, which has been our favorite resource. For a beekeeper, even if you're not going to end up building a hive, I think you can learn a few things from this book. It's worth checking out! Simply Superb!

I have over 30 years of woodworking experience and have built up an extensive library of reference books and plans for making all types of furniture .. If only they were all this good. Great reading, great plans, and a great service to our diminishing bee population. Precise plans and spot-on instructions. All I can say is it is simply superb.

WOW! This Book Totally Overdelivers on Expectations

I have been toying with the idea of doing a little hobbyest bee keeping and I have developed something of a library of references. Nearly everyone book I have has a building plans section, but none can hold a candle to this book. The Illustrations are nothing short of amazing. I wish the "Look Inside" feature showed at least one exampled of the way the plans are illustrated. They are crisp and concise. The dimensions are clear and the exploded views of the hives make assembly obvious. I just checked and the illustrations are from Felix Freudzon and he deserves his name on the cover as well for his contributions. I read a lot of woodworking magazines and books and this book has some of the finest build plan illustrations I've seen.

But I don't want to belittle the author. You can tell this is a labor of love. The writing reads easily and clearly. I was drawn into it and basically read it in one sitting. There was some skimming on the plan materials but even the basic carpentry was worth reading. Also, I have never seen any Dummies author use the tips and reminder icons as much as this author. I really think he did a great job of focusing his topic and laying out a stunningly elegant book.

- For what this is, I really don't see any cons. I want to be clear that this is not a complete bee keeping guide. Its focus is on constructing hives and it excels at that, but you will need to have another resource for beekeeping.
- If I was pressed to find something that I was disappointed in, it would be that he only has one paragraph on queen excluders and he does not show it on his illustrations. But truly, that is about the only fault I could find.

Summary
I see this book as being a long time reference for any beekeeper. The plans are absolutely over the top good, and doable (Although many require more than a beginners woodworking ability, especially the designs with lots of dadoes, rabbits and finger joinery.) But all in all, this should be on the bookshelf of every beekeeper who makes their own hives.

About the Author

Domini Kemp is an award winning chef, food writer, and entrepreneur. In 2013, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and since then she has shifted her focus towards healthier eating. She changed her column in the Irish Times to focus on healthier recipes and opened Alchemy Juice Co., a juice and wholefoods cafe. The Ketogenic Kitchen is her fifth cookbook and is focused on nutrition and well-being. 

Patricia Daly is an experienced nutritional therapist and author specializing in cancer care and the ketogenic diet in particular. She has worked with hundreds of cancer patients in Ireland and abroad, lectures at the Irish Institute of Nutrition and Health, and is a well-regarded speaker at conferences and in cancer centers. An invaluable resource for achieving a nourishing low-carb or ketogenic lifestyle

The Ketogenic Kitchen is a must-have book for anyone interested in better health, particularly those who are open to -- or already follow -- a ketogenic or low-carb way of eating.

In addition to providing guidance on achieving a healthy, sustainable ketogenic lifestyle, it may very well be life-changing for people with cancer.

The Authors

Domini Kemp is a chef who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and followed a diet based on unprocessed, low-carbohydrate foods during chemo and radiation. Patricia Daly is a former business analyst in corporate banking and current nutritional therapist who had remarkable results using a ketogenic diet as part of her therapy for eye cancer. At diagnosis, both women were eating what most people would consider very healthy diets: lots of whole grains, fruits, legumes and other foods high in complex carbs and low in fat. However, that all changed once they discovered the connection between high blood sugar levels and cancer.

The Book

The Ketogenic Kitchen is actually two books in one, and they complement each other beautifully.

The first part, "The Low Carb Way," is written by Domini. It includes a carbohydrate sensitivity quiz (created by Dr. Georgia Ede), a discussion about the benefits of carb restriction for cancer and other diseases, Domini's own story, and many delicious whole-food, low-carb recipes. The recipes are arranged by type: Breakfast, Soup, Mains, Vegetables, Dressings and Desserts. There is also a section with several vegetarian entrees that sound delicious.

In the second part, "The Ketogenic Way," Patricia shares her own story and expertise about the ketogenic diet, including detailed helpful hints for getting the best results from this way of eating. She also has a fantastic section entitled "Myth-busting FAQs" in which she addresses common concerns about the ketogenic diet in an evidence-based way that is also very easy to understand, along with its potential benefits as a cancer therapy to be used in conjunction with conventional treatment.

The Meal Plans and Recipes

The first thing you'll probably notice when you look through this book are the exquisitely photographed recipes. I was also happy to see that each recipe's nutrition analysis includes the macronutrient composition percentages.

While there are several recipes in "The Low Carb Way" that have carb counts too high for a ketogenic diet, there are also many with 6 grams of digestible carb or less per serving, which can easily fit into a keto lifestyle. Here are just a few examples:

Eggs "Benedict" (4.4 grams net carb)
​Chicken, Cashew and Broccoli Stir Fry (3.7 grams net carb)
Ridiculously Tasty Prawns (1.1 grams net carb)

As someone who favors gradually easing into carbohydrate restriction rather than going from a very high carb intake to one that is very low, I was happy to see that Patricia takes the same approach in "The Ketogenic Way." Her meal plans start with about 50 grams of digestible ("net") carb per day and progressively reduce daily carb intake to 12 grams over the course of 2 weeks.

Patricia's menu plans take the guesswork out of how many carbs to consume each day for your daily goal. In addition, she has organized this section so that the recipes for each day's meal plan are right on the same or the following page. I love that she encourages the reader to make extra portions of meat and vegetables to use as leftovers for the next day's recipes, which helps minimize the amount of time needed for meal planning and preparation. Patricia provides a lot of helpful information throughout these chapters, including easy and effective ways to include probiotics in your diet; identifying food sensitivities and adjusting your keto diet as needed; the benefits of sea vegetables, coconut oil and organ meats; and much more.

I also appreciate the emphasis placed on the healing qualities of foods in addition to their macronutrient composition. Herbs and spices are used liberally in the recipes, both for their antioxidant benefits as well as adding flavor and texture to the dishes. Nourishing bone broth and meat and vegetable stocks are the base for many of her entrees and sides.

The book is easy and it's useful

The book is easy and it's useful, but it's not fascinating. I had hoped there would be some story telling. King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is a quick read, and you'll get worthwhile ideas for personal growth out of it. Moore wants you to be a strong, confident, caring masculine man. So, it's all good. Buy the book.

I get the idea of archetypes, and I generally enjoy the mythopoetic approach because at its heart is story telling. Yet, archetypes are a lot more interesting when Joseph Campbell tells the story of the Green Knight than they are when Robert Moore presents them as models for masculine values/behavior. Campbell tells stories to illustrate how the archetypes work. Here, Moore takes an idea of modelling that is implicit in Campbell and maintains that the archetypes he has chosen are excellent models for personal growth.

Moore builds a hierarchy of positive attributes for each of the archetypes listed in the title of his book. These attributes are presented juxtaposed with the archetype's "antithetical/negative" aspects, called the shadow aspects (Carl G. Jung). Moore wants us to identify when our behavior is "acting out" shadow aspects of our personality. That shadow behavior is immature. To be mature we need to change our behavior and be more like one of the confident adult archetypes listed in the book's title and less like a solipsistic youth. Moore parses out the "archetypal values" for each of his four characters. What Moore does is straight forward and easily applied. In essence, are you acting like a man or like a boy? Here, according to Moore, is how grown men act according to the four defining masculine roles they must fulfill.

useful psychological, philosophical, and anthropological observations

Not the typical kind of book I read, being something of a self-help book, but nonetheless filled with very useful psychological, philosophical, and anthropological observations about the divine or mature masculine. These archetypes (first postulated by Jung, if my understanding is correct) are based on classical cultural roles and evolutionary psychology, and describe the ideal aspects of man; applicable in the spectrum of life from tribal hunter-gatherers to highly technological. It also describes some of the aspects our more modern society lacks; rites of passage and initiation, and on why this 'age of the individual' has hurt the function of men in daily life; pushing them into habits of infantilized behavior and / or toxic masculinity. It offers some small suggestions for self-driven practices to effect change in an individual's life, but my primary takeaway was this; the therapist or psychiatrist has in many ways replaced the priest or shaman in our society; healing the hearts and minds of the man-children consumerist society has made of us, and our 'kings' can no longer be looked to as examples of correct action, being so corrupt, and manifesting only the shadow aspects of the archetype. What then do we do in this strange age to live up to ideals we no longer have the guidance to become?

Fascinating and useful

Brief and powerful, KWML sets forth a new psychological model of masculine maturity and wholeness. By identifying the four central aspects of the male psyche and illustrating what a healthy, robust archetype looks like in each case versus the twin shadow sides of inflation or negation of the archetype, men can quickly identify where they're falling short and develop strategies for conscious growth.

Moore and Gillette provide great social commentary, suggesting that patriarchy is not to blame for the world's ills, but what they call "puerarchy" (rule of boys). "The enemy for both sexes is not the other sex," they write, "but infantile grandiosity and the splitting of the Self that results from it." The urgent problem, then, becomes helping to initiate boys and adult boys into true masculine adulthood. This, they convincingly argue, can help create change on a large scale.

The end of the book provides some practical techniques to begin integrating weak or dormant archetypes into your life. I usually balk at practical tips but some of these exercises are actually things I could see myself doing.

The bottom line: with its vivid archetypal examples, KWML is a quick and effective way to guide men toward fuller, more productive lives. Well worth a read.

The author spent nearly three years researching vaccine studies from around the world and summarizing them in this monumental work. Each chapter in this Vaccine Safety Manual begins with a definition of the particular disease for which a vaccine has been developed, including data on who is most at risk, disease prevalence and severity. The vaccine for each disease is then analyzed according to its safety and efficacy profile. The safety sections include studies documenting vaccine-associated morbidity and mortality, as well as several personal stories from vaccine victims attesting to the real toll on human lives. Some chapters also include case histories from the U.S. government's own national database of vaccine damage -- VAERS. The efficacy sections analyze data from multiple sources to reveal the prophylactic potential of each vaccine: how likely it is to protect against the disease and reduce its incidence throughout society. I have been investigating vaccines for more than 20 years. When my son was born, the matter became important to me. I began by studying medical and scientific journals. The data was disturbing. Evidence showed that vaccines are often unsafe and ineffective. In fact, some vaccines cause new diseases. I was even more shocked to learn that powerful people within the organized medical profession are aware of vaccine safety and protection deficiencies, but seem to have an implicit agreement to obscure facts, alter truth, and deceive the public. Vaccine failings are minimized while benefits are exaggerated to avert any negative publicity that might frighten concerned parents, threaten the vaccine program and lower vaccination rates. My first book, Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective? was written to provide parents with a summary of my initial findings.

I wrote this current book, Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health Practitioners (new, updated 2nd edition), to counterbalance conventional dogma. I researched vaccine studies and articles from around the world, then summarized them for your benefit. All of the data is footnoted in the text and referenced. The information I uncovered does not support the oft-heard claim that vaccine benefits outweigh their risks. In other words, if you'd like to read more about the benefits and less about the risks, there are plenty of "official" websites that you can visit (or speak to your doctor). However, if you prefer uncensored vaccine data, then this important reference guide is for you.

Extraordinary Book for Necessary Due Diligence

I was not vaccinated as a child. With the sparse information on vaccines that was available at the time, my parents did their research and elected to raise me without medical intervention. I always seemed healthier than my vaccinated peers, who were sick many times each year. I rarely became ill, and when I did get sick, I healed quickly, always without allopathic medicine. Of course, non-vaccination is a choice that should be made only after ample research. Today, I am a well-educated, healthy adult, and soon I will have children. My children will need to know that their parents, like mine, did their due diligence prior to birth, or shortly thereafter.

When I came across the Vaccine Safety Manual, I immediately realized that vaccine research has entered a new era. This is no ordinary book. Although it is a scholarly guide, it is well organized and well written so that average people (and avid researchers) can quickly gain the knowledge they seek on any vaccine. You don't need to read this book from beginning to end, but can use it as a reference for the vaccines that you are most interested in learning about. For example, I wanted to know why babies are given the hepatitis B vaccine, so I started with that chapter, which begins on page 261 (and ends on page 312). This chapter begins with a thorough definition of the disease, who is most likely to get it, how many people get it, etc. All of the information is taken directly from official sources, such as peer-reviewed studies. There are sections in that chapter on safety and how well the vaccine works, and the safety section breaks the studies down into sub-sections, such as studies that link the vaccine to a) arthritis, b) autoimmune/nervous system disorders, c)visual/hearing problems, d) blood disorders, etc. You get the idea: this is a very thorough and very organized manual. (It does explain why babies receive this vaccine. You may be unhappily surprised!)

I highly recommend this book. It helped me to realize that my parents were wise in raising me, and you, too, would be wise to read this manual before you make your decisions.

Excellent supplement to his previous book

This book was written by Neil Miller, the author of the classic Vaccines: Are they really safe and effective? This book is more up to date, as many new vaccines have been introduced which were not covered in his earlier work.

It has a chapter on every major vaccine that addresses:
* What the disease is
* How it is contracted
* How it is treated
* The history of the vaccine
* Research regarding the vaccine's effectiveness
* Research on the vaccine's safety

He has a chapter on autism that is 60 pages long that contains charts that shows the dramatic increase in autism after the introduction of the MMR vaccine. His charts are one of my favorite aspects of his books because they make the statistics so much more powerful when you can see them illustrated visually, and he includes over 90 in this book. The autism chapter has congressional testimony given by parents of vaccine injured children that will make any parent want to do more homework on the subject prior to vaccinating. He also goes through the studies that claim there is no link between the MMR and autism. I found this particularly helpful, because I'd heard of such studies, but never knew the details. He presents a response to both studies by Dr. Andrew Wakefield. He also has a paragraph on the Homestead Health Services, which is an alternative medical facility in Chicago. The children in the practice aren't vaccinated, and of the 30,000 children they've treated, they've never seen one with autism.

One of the most disturbing themes that I saw throughout the book is that children who get a vaccine are more likely to develop a more serious case of the disease than the unvaccinated. I didn't like the fact that he used vaccine and immunization interchangeably. While a vaccine may confer clinical immunity by creating antibodies, it does not necessarily give the person immunity to the disease.

At 467 pages long, this is an excellent reference book, but it's not one you will blow through in a day. This is a book that I will recommend to my peers. If you are new to the subject, you may want to start with his previous book, Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective as it is shorter and probably less intimidating, then refer to this book for a discussion on the newer vaccines such as the hepatitis A vaccine.

If you are interested in the vaccine debate, I also recommend Vaccines: What CDC Documents and Science Reveal. It is an excellent DVD created by a mainstream ER doctor who stumbled across the vaccine debate, and became obsessed with it. I like it because there are some people who simply won't take the time to read a book on vaccines, but they will watch a DVD. Hopefully, you will do both.

This book belongs in every home and doctors office

As concerned parents, we have been researching the safety and effectiveness of vaccines for many months. We participated in a presentation were the speaker was one of my favorite researchers and authors on the topic, Neil Z. Miller. He is a medical research journalist and natural health advocate and author of numerous articles and books on vaccines. Miller is also the director of the Think Twice Global Vaccine Institute. He has a degree in psychology (with an emphasis on statistical analysis) and is a member of Mensa.

The presentation was about two hours and only touched the surface on the extensive amount documented data he has discovered through government, medical and scientific journals. He started researching vaccines before his son was born over 23 years ago. What began as a parental endeavor for information turned into a public awareness crusade.

He tells us most of the vaccine information that the public is told is misinformation and propaganda. Accurate data is not released through regular media outlets.

During the presentation they polled the audience on various questions. We learned that the U.S. has more vaccinations than any other country in the world and we also have the 42nd worst infant mortality rate in the world.

Dr. Baylock, a well known neurosurgeon has documented damage in children's brains due to toxic overload from vaccines. He wrote the compelling foreword of Miller's latest book.

The "idea" that vaccines will keep our children safe is like playing russian roulette. Miller advocates parents being fully informed and know that they have freedom of choice, especially when it comes to the health and well being of their children. "Don't count on your doctors to give you all he information." Miller warns. He suggests looking at each vaccine independently and that is exactly was he has presented for all people in his book: Vaccine Safety Manual for Concerned Families and Health Practitioners.

We live in a pill popping society where there is a drug for every ailment, but we have more chronic conditions and diseases than we have ever had before. Drug companies continue to make drugs and vaccine manufacturers will continue to make vaccines. They will put pressure on the FDA to say that they are safe and the CDC to recommend them to the schedule. Currently families that follow the recommended schedule are giving their children 36 drugs by 18 months of age. "We are injecting healthy people with unhealthy substances." Miller said.

Miller says, "There are more vaccines in the pipeline". The next big push is for adolescent and adults vaccines, even vaccines for those with addictions. There are no studies done on combination vaccines and how they react with one another. Not to mention any reactions with other environmental, drug or food chemicals or toxins.

"This is not hearsay. I have documented all of this information." Miller says. The FDA and CDC have a 12-15 member panel. The FDA determines what will be licensed and the CDC will then recommend it to the schedule.

Congressmen Dan Burton held congressional hearings to investigate these committees. There were clear conflicts of interest including, members that owned stock or patent to a vaccine or they were paid consultants to the vaccine manufactures.

In June of 2000 there was a `secret' meeting of top officials from Big Pharma, FDA and CDC. There they discussed the evidence that vaccines were harmful and instead of alerting parents they spent the rest of the weekend on how they were going to cover it up. Miller also addressed some common questions including mercury being removed from vaccines. In 1999 AAP said mercury was going to be removed from vaccines; however it was not required for the current stock of vaccines to be returned or destroyed. Three years later to balance that out, it was mandated that children get multiple flu vaccines that had high concentrations of mercury (thimerisol the chemical that contains 50% mercury).

Many parents choose to space out vaccines or create their own schedule. Miller thinks there may be some merit to it. He gave a drinking analogy. The reactions are different if you have shot after shot of tequila or have 1 tequila shot that night out with your friends. He still warns that if you decided to space out or do single shots the vaccines still come with significant reactions. There is no testing or screening to know if a child has a predisposition or may have a reaction.
We do know that more and more children are having reactions and autism is on the rise. The good news is for parents that choose not to vaccinate there are either religious or philosophical exemptions available.

Miller tells us that Autism rates surpasses cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. This is a true epidemic. He also mentions the flu statistics are false. "More people die in this country from asthma and malnutrition than the flu." Miller also spoke of the link between vaccines and asthma, mercury and autism but was very clear that mercury is not the only problem. "All of this information is documented information," he repeats.

We are conditioned to believe that vaccines are safe and vaccines are effective. If this was true children would not be having reactions and dying and people that were vaccinated would not get the disease. This is clearly not the case.

Another astounding bit of information was about the Polio Vaccine. There is an industry that raises monkeys and then kills them to use their kidneys to develop the polio vaccine.
Monkeys carry several viruses and one in particular, SV-40 is known to cause cancer. Numerous people were infected and cancer rates have increased 20-30% around the world.
This virus is also transmitted similarly to AIDS.
