Academic and Fascinating

This rendering of the historical changes in Russia prior to the Soviet revolution is fascinating. To understand the Russian nation one must understand how it has transpired over the centuries and this excellent piece of historical writing helps to put that all into perspective. Primarily it raised questions in my mind about our own country, noting that we are in the transition from a Judeo-Christian nation to one that is secular. When that happened in Russia, it changed the ethics, the sociology, the economy and the ethnic culture of the nation. The rest is history.

Misnomer

Based on the title, I hoped to find a history of Russian Orthodoxy. Instead, the book seems obsessed only with how and when Russian leaders described Russia as distinctly the heirs of the Orthodox faith, in other words the third Christian Empire or "kingdom of God": beginning with Rome, followed by Byzantium, and finally Russia. There are certainly merits to the historical information, but the book is neither chronologically linear, nor a history of Russian faith. Instead, it is a perusal of a national idea, in apparently nonlinear form.

In Carlton Mellick III's fourteenth bizarro novel, The Haunted Vagina, the reader is presented with another Mellickian mind-bending concept--what if your girlfriend's vagina was a gateway to another world? We are introduced to Steve and his girlfriend Stacy, whose "haunted" vagina is a problem for their sex life. When a skeleton-like creature emerges from Stacy's vagina, the two decide to explore what may be inside of her.

When Steve explores (and becomes trapped in) Stacy's vaginal world, he reflects upon his relationship with her. Mellick makes it obvious through clear dialogue and abstract imagery that their relationship is not healthy. Despite these strange occurrences and relationship problems, Steve remains hopelessly devoted to Stacy. This love is the basis for Mellick's return to a common theme: the power, figuratively and literally, a women's vagina can hold over a man.

The joys and terrors that Steve finds in the vagina reflect his relationship with Stacy. The power and trust struggles are seen from inside both characters--inside Steve, who is the narrator of the story, and from literally inside Stacy. This allows the reader a uniquely personal viewpoint of Steve and Stacy's downward spiral as lovers.

Mellick has made a name for himself by writing consistently engaging, strange, and downright weird stories. His characters can sometimes get lost in the weirdness. The Haunted Vagina is not really about the hallucinogenic world Steve finds inside Stacy; it is about the characters themselves. Their doubts and fears fuel the plot.

Fan's looking only for Mellick's hardcore gore and extremely bizarre imagery may be disappointed, as this book is more subtle than its predecessors. Don't be mistaken: this is still very much a horror book that explores the vagaries and dangers of lust, love and obsession. In this Bizarro novel, Mellick illustrates the human condition better than many authors of "realism."

Despite having dealt with similar themes before (e.g. Razor Wire Pubic Hair and The Steel Breakfast Era), this is Mellick's most mature and effective representation of men's sexual fears. His sparse style paints an intimate portrait of Steve and Stacy's relationship. The Haunted Vagina deserves attention; it's among Mellick's very best.

Probably not for fans of The Princess Bride

If you're a hopeless romantic and you love stories that feature charismatic and likable people who discover meaning in each other, it might be very easy to look at the cutesy-weird cover of this book and read its quirky-strange description and even read the "Look Inside" preview and come away thinking that this is a somewhat freakier, naughtier version of the kind of stories you like. My suspicion is that in that case, you'll be disappointed.

This is a wacky story from page one, establishing its offbeat sensibilities when the narrator gushes over with adoration for his girlfriend but admits that his devotion is tested by the haunted quality of her vagina. What you won't get from the cover, the summary, or the preview, though, is a sense of how dark the story will turn as the narration progresses. It never loses its sense of whimsy, and I hate spoilers, so I won't say whether or not the tone swings back up at the end. But I would characterize it as a horror story with elements of romantic comedy, not a romantic comedy built around a horror-story concept.

It is also NOT erotica or pornography, despite some very graphic (and insanely bizarre) sex scenes.

With those caveats, if you like stories with rich characterization that explore serious issues in human relationships, and if you also like wildly inventive fantastical worlds, and if you don't mind some darkness and some explicit and peculiar bedroom scenes, you'll probably end up finding this worthwhile. Be prepared, though, to reassess your opinions of the situation and the characters several times throughout the book. Mellick intentionally keeps the reader guessing, and if you don't buy into that, you might get blindsided.

In a nutshell, The Haunted Vagina is relentlessly inventive, thoroughly unpredictable, occasionally gut-wrenching, and at times a straight-out hoot. For those whose tastes are eclectic, I recommend it. To those who like things conventional, I would suggest looking elsewhere (although I suspect that not many people who fit that description are even reading this review).

Footnote: I read this book twice in the space of two or three days. It's an easy, breezy read, and I wanted to go back and see if some of the later elements of the story were foreshadowed in the earlier parts. It held up really well on a second reading, and the care with which the story was constructed impressed me.

Absolutely Stunning first intro into Mr. Mellick's Universe

This book is my first introduction into the mind of one Mr. Carlton Mellick III. This story is short and quick but doesn't leave any unanswered questions. From the beginning, our main character is a man who declares his love for this quirky chic named Stacey. Stacey, for lack of a better term is rather harsh in her emotions and selfish in her endeavors and for whatever reason our guy falls for her and hard. Despite lack of sex and a terrifying phobia of Stacey's vagina (rightfully so with noises, crying, and wailing coming from within the fleshy cave one can not blame him for his reservations)but when a skeleton decides to climb his way out of Stacey's special place, she now convinces our sorry sap to climb inside her and take a look around. This is NOT an easy feat. Coming from a chick with a vagina, a normal one as far as I know, fisting is a hard enough sexual act, so after being lubed up, shaved down and shoved in, our lil buddy is on his way into the world that lives within Stacey (is final push in by Stacey reminded very much of the South Park episode with Paris Hilton...) I absolutely love the world inside her. The description Mellick gives of the village and the people is of warped awesomeness. The "imaginary" ghost girl of Stacey that resides within her exudes adorable childlike wonderment and her character is by far one of my favorites. She is simple and matter of fact in her actions and love for the main character. The main character however only wants to be released from within Stacey and out into her arms, but this is not to be. Once he is trapped by Fig, it is only a matter of time before he begins to change and become more like the creature of Fig. Eventually he returns Fig's love after being left behind by Stacey. Their love grows and grows and he realizes that Stacey though he loved her, he now belongs with Fig and is happier with her than he was ever with Stacey. I am not a sappy person for the most part, and love stories are just shit to me, this story is the perfect love story if I were to ever fall in love with one (HA!)

Mellick's explanation of how the world became to be is rather intriguing and oddly beautiful. His explanation for their existence can be summed on as an incredibly odd STD lol. I liked the story a lot, I fell in love with the cover art, and I am pleased to know this author has lots more work for me to delve into.

Fun read!

Man, what a great title! This was the first Carlton Mellick book I read and I was not disappointed. While this book definitely has absurd themes and events (like crawling through a vagina as a portal to another world), it was easily readable and had a coherent plot. It's pretty short and can be read in one sitting, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would say the Kindle edition is well worth the price.

I was interested in getting into Bizzaro literature to get fresh inspiration for my own writing. If you're looking to be inspired and read something different, I'd recommend this book. Apes*** is next on my Mellick reading list.

As CEO of his own communications consulting firm, research strategist Maslansky advises clients like Starbucks, Bank of America and Microsoft on successfully communicating with their customers, an effort he admits is far more challenging in the shaky economic aftermath of the 2008 financial collapse: as a nation, we are more distrustful than ever that the government and other major institutions are looking out for the interests of average citizens and customers. To combat rising skepticism, Maslansky's offers a step-by-step strategy for "credible communication" based in quantitative and qualitative research, including input from focus groups and surveys demonstrating people's responses to different forms of messaging, and real-world examples from a number of industries, including finance and politics (contrasting, for example, President Obama's campaign messages with then-Senator Hillary Clinton's). About the Author
Although he almost always had a lead role in elementary school plays as well as church pageants, Don Gallo's dramatic interests ended abruptly one Easter Sunday when he was unable to recall a single word from a memorized passage he was attempting to recite at the morning church service. Any theatrical talents he may possess have since been utilized only in English classroom and lecture halls.

Dr. Gallo, who has been a junior high school English teacher and reading specialist, is a professor of English at Central Connecticut State University, where he supervises student teachers and teaches courses in writing and in literature for young adults. He lives in West Hartford, Connecticut.

He has edited three collections of short stories written by Famous writers of books for young adults; Sixteen, Visions, and Connections; and he has written a critical biography of author Richard Peck. His most recent book is a collection of autobiographies of notable young adult authors called Speaking for Ourselves.

a new approach when facing competing storylines

The Language of Trust reads like a manual for communicating complex issues in an environment of growing cynicism. It's got a nice balance of principles, working examples, and research-driven insights. The book includes lots of topical coverage of perception challenges faced by financial services, the environment, healthcare, energy, and policy campaigns, to name some of the industries covered.

The book presents a unique perspective, I think probably most relevant for corporate communicators and industry trade groups. As a business storyteller myself, I was most fascinated with the sections that dealt with shifting perceptions and that everybody has competing versions of the truth. As Maslansky describes, too often we lead with "our truth" instead of trying to frame a story that will connect to "their truth" - how our audience sees and experiences the world. That one insight, explored in depth makes the book a valued addition to my library.

The content in each chapter is filled with both principles and working examples. Sometimes it feels a little "straight-laced" in how it was edited, yet I think a lot of readers will appreciate the breezy approach. It's definitely written for a senior executive who's looking for a quick practical read that goes beyond just theoretical superlatives. My one fear is that it sometimes reads like a "manual for sounding like you care", and in the wrong hands, this book could become only that.

The Language of Trust will get you thinking, that's for sure! The book has a strong focus on words, and how changing opinion, often requires a shift in language across everything you do. Many linguistic re-framing examples are provided which was one of my favorite aspects. Also Chapter 10 brings attention to social media and how the boundaries of narrative are evolving. An important dimension I was thrilled to see covered.

The Language of Trust is Crucial to Your Business

It's no surprise that language and words play a key role in making your message credible and engaging to your audience. Michael Maslansky and his co-authors, Scott West, Gary DeMoss, and David Saylor, do a great job explaining just how important language is to selling your product or service in their new book, The Language of Trust: Selling Ideas in a World of Skeptics.

It's always been surprising to me that so few companies spend much time and money on crafting the messages and communications they use for their business. Michael presents a compelling case for why this is absolutely crucial to your business in an era where "trust is dead".

But more important than an analysis of the post-trust era in America, Michael talks about the Four Principles of Credible Communications (Be Personal, Be Plainspoken, Be Positive, Be Plausible) and the New Word Order (Engagement, Theirs Before Yours, Context). It is these two sections that are an absolute goldmine for anyone looking to create new messages or improve the communications of their organization.

Michael explains how changing the language you use is hard and that these principles may run counter to what you've done before, and believe still works, but there is little doubt after you read the book that you do need to change your language in a world of skeptics. You can no longer rely on the facts and hope to change the view held by your audience as the facts can mean different things to different people. You need to approach the language you use from your audience's perspective and use the Four Principles.

In addition to helping you choose the right words, Michael uses the New Word Order program to explain how to communicate the right message at the right time to your audience. The idea behind the program is that the process is equally important to getting the message right and that you need to follow the steps to be successful. The fact that Michael outlines a process here is extremely valuable, since many believe communications is more art than science, because it allows you to apply the program to your business and goals.

In the end, the list of lessons you can take from this book and apply to your communications is where the real value exists in The Language of Trust. I'm quite certain I'll reference this book numerous times in my work. This book reinforced for me just how important the words you choose are to your message and marketing overall. It definitely got me thinking again about how to improve the language I use everyday and I'm certain it will get you thinking too.

A communications playbook

This book not only helps you think better about what you plan to say, but about what you are aleady saying in your creative copy, your social media, your industry outreach, and elsewhere. I approached this book as a "skeptic," if not entirely a cynic, but came away a firmly convinced believer that the author, Maslansky, has laid out an insightful playbook for how to communcate with maximum impact accross a broad range of topics, audiences and media. I highly recommend this book to anyone selling a product, an idea, or themself.

Does what the title says

I am a penetration tester and I found this book is is an excellent guide for assessing mobile applications. The other platform-specific books are great if you want to become a true expert in a specific platform, but this book provides the right amount of information for evaluating an application in a reasonable time frame. Don't be confused by the page counts (which was my biggest concern), I found this book to contain more useful application vulnerability information than the platform-specific books. More importantly, it provides the information you'll want to know, such as how to find the vulnerabilities in the application and in the code, and how to remediate them. The other books are great if you want to find advanced exploits, such as memory corruption attacks, including kernel exploits, but for general mobile application assessment, this is what I'd recommend. I hope they keep this book updated regularly since a lot of the details will be out of date in several years.

Full disclosure: I have not read the Windows Mobile or Blackberry sections.

If you're looking for ways to assess mobile applications, this is the book for you. This book is to mobile application penetration testing as the Web Application Hacker's Handbook is to web app penetration testing. The iOS Hacker's Handbook and Android Hacker's Handbooks are more device and OS-centric, whereas this book will give you the methodology to get up to speed testing the applications running on each of these platforms. (There is a small section on Windows Phone hacking as well). It's a good resource to get you from zero knowledge to dangerous enough.
